After starting out as a spinoff from The CW's hit superhero show Arrow, The Flash quickly established itself as a phenomenon in its own right. The show is centered around the heroic exploits of Barry Allen (Gustin Grant), a forensic scientist who was struck by lightening and turned into a speedster. He and his Star Labs crew fight crime and metahumans in Central City. Season 2 has become even more ambitious in its storytelling, exploring Earth 2 and pitting 'Team Flash' against the super-villain Zoom.
This season has also brought a flood of exciting behind the scenes developments, as Gustin is set to appear as Barry on an upcoming episode of Supergirl, The Flash's CBS sister show. Geek culture icon Kevin Smith (Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Red State) signed on to direct an episode that Thor screenwriter Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class) will write. If sounds as though they might have one more surprising addition that should make this episode hit pop culture bingo.
In a telling post on Instagram, Smith write a heartfelt note praising the cast and crew of the Flash TV show. This was along with an image of himself and Jason Mewes (who will also appear in Smith's next film, Yoga Hosers) standing outside of Central City's main coffee stop Jitters looking every bit like their fictional counterparts Jay and Silent Bob. The former is a motor mouth who cusses almost constantly, the latter is a gadgetry genius who rarely speaks. This duo appears in the majority of films that are made by Smith (going back to Clerks in 1994), typically busy selling of smoking marijuana.

Went for some coffee at #ccjitters and found @jayandsilentbob loitering in front of the store. Yesterday was a productive Day 2 on the episode of #TheFlash that I'm "directing", with the cast, crew & I shooting four different scenes in the Cortex and Medical Bay at #StarLabs! I call it "directing" because neither cast nor crew need my guidance here to make something great. We shot some big little scenes yesterday that will break your heart and speed-force it back together again in that way only #TheFlash can. I love this show, so seeing how it really happens behind the scenes has been nothing short of thrilling. We start Day 3 of 8 in a couple of hours... #KevinSmith #jaymewes #centralcity #vancouver #jayandsilentbob #runbarryrun #funbarryfun
Mewes and Smith have a long history of appearing in films together, including both Clerks films, Mallrats, Dogma, and (of course) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. No stranger to a shared universe, Smith has created his own fictional shared world called Askewniverse, where, with only a few exceptions, most of his films and shows take place. Having Jay and Silent Bob appear in Central City would mean that the Askewniverse and the CW/DC TV universe somehow overlap - which might actually work on a time and world bending show like The Flash (what with its multi-verse).
Their appearance might take viewers out of the action in Central City as their presence would be a fairly loud wink to the audience, depending on how obvious their cameo is. Of course Mewes could have simply been visiting his friend on set and snapped a quick photo, as social media is not always the most reliable source for developing news. Either way it will be interesting to see if the distinct pair will be wrapped into The Flash in any way.
Supergirl airs Mondays @8pm on CBS. The Flash returns with ‘Trajectory’ on March 22 @8pm on The CW. Arrow returns with ‘Broken Hearts’ on March 23 @8pm on The CW. Legends of Tomorrow will return with ‘Left Behind’ on March 31, 2016 at 8pm on The CW.
