A majority of The Flash's third season (so far) has been dedicated to introducing and setting up new characters and storylines for the DC TV show to play around with moving forwards, with the first half of the season being dedicated almost entirely to Barry paying the consequences of his actions in "Flashpoint." Now, the second half of the season has been set in motion again, as Barry and his friends work continuously to try and unravel the mystery behind the villainous Savitar and stop him from completing his mission of killing Iris (Candice Patton). None of this has been coming especially easy for Barry, as usual, with even more new characters and metahumans still being introduced and causing trouble along the way.

In one of the most-anticipated detours of the season, however, The Flash's next episode is set to be dedicated entirely to the return of Gorilla Grodd. The show's iconic villain will make his comeback after Barry, Cisco (Carlos Valdes), Julian (Tom Felton), and Cailtin (Danielle Panabaker) journey to Gorilla City on Earth-2 to try and rescue Jesse Quick's (Violett Beane) abducted father.

It predictably doesn't take long after arriving in Gorilla City for the group to be captured by Grodd as well, who tells Barry and co. that he needs their help in stopping Solovar (guest star Keith David), the leader of Gorilla City, from invading Earth-1. The promo for "Attack on Gorilla City" has been released by The CW following last night's episode, giving fans their first look at the new Grodd-centric episode. Check it out for yourself above.

The Flash season 2 - Gorilla Grodd

Despite the many complex and ambitious fight sequences and set pieces that have come and gone since Grodd's last appearance, the iconic character still remains one of The Flash's greatest technical achievements. So with an episode not only set to feature his return but the appearance of presumably multiple other talking gorillas, The Flash is on the brink once again of exceeding all expectations fans might have had for the smaller budget, CW superhero series. That is, of course, if The Flash manages to deliver the same quality visual effects that it did with Grodd's previous two appearances.

The brief introduction of Gorilla City in the show's second season assured fans that they would get to see more of Grodd, and that next time, it would be in a location unlike any that they had seen before. But it will be interesting to see how exactly The Flash picks back up with the beloved gorilla, especially following the tumultuous set of events that led to him being sent to Gorilla City in the first place. It's entirely possible that he could still feel a strong personal connection to Caitlin Snow, and the decision to have Grodd ask for Barry's help means that the character could be moving farther away from the traditional villainous stereotypes most comic book fans have associated him with... or it could just be another clever trick on Grodd's part. Either way, "Attack on Gorilla City" is being set up as one of The Flash's most ambitious episodes to date, and the first promo certainly makes the episode look like it'll be more than deserving of that title.

The Flash season 3 continues in two weeks on February 21st with ‘Attack On Gorilla City’ @8pm on The CW.
