Season 3 of The Flash has thus far gotten off to a pretty strong start. After the first episode saw the introduction and quick resolution of the Flashpoint arc, Barry Allen has spent the last two weeks putting the pieces of his life back together. But now that Iris and Joe seem to be back on good terms, and Cisco is moving through the grieving process (from losing his brother), things are beginning to get back to normal -- to the extent fighting metahumans is normal. The new metahumans that are popping up, though, are not from the particle accelerator explosion, but rather, due to Dr. Alchemy, who is restoring the abilities of those who had powers during Flashpoint.
So far the Rival and Magenta have had their powers restored by Alchemy, and next week will see a new metahuman pop up: Mirror Master. In the comics, Mirror Master has long been a prominent member of Flash's Rogues. But even though Mirror Master will be the newest member of the rogues to appear on The Flash, he will not be the only one showing up next week in Central City.
The CW has released next week's episode's synopsis as well as some images, both of which confirm that Wentworth Miller will be making his return as Captain Cold. You can check out the synopsis and images below:
"WENTWORTH MILLER RETURNS AS CAPTAIN COLD; MIRROR MASTER AND THE TOP BATTLE WITH THE FLASH -- Barry (Grant Gustin) continues to train Jesse (guest star Violett Beane) and when a new meta human, Mirror Master (guest star Grey Damon), appears on the scene he lets her tag along. Mirror Master has teamed up with his old partner, Top (guest star Ashley Rickards), and is looking for Snart (Wentworth Miller) to even a score. Jesse is quick to join the chase but defies one of Barry's orders which results in disastrous consequences. Stefan Pleszczynski directed the episode written by Benjamin Raab & Deric A. Hughes (#304)."
The last time present-day Captain Cold was seen, he was saving his frequent partner, Mick Rory, in the penultimate episode of Legends of Tomorrow's first season. Despite his sacrificial demise, it was quickly announced that Wentworth Miller had signed on to star across all of The CW's DC shows. The question then became whether we would be seeing a past or alternate Earth version of Captain Cold, or if he could be brought back to life. Of course, Flashpoint makes for a tidy fix, so it appears that Earth-1 Leonard Snart is alive and well (only Uncle Ben stays dead in the comics, right?).
Most will welcome Wentworth Miller back to The Flash with open arms, as Captain Cold was consistently noted for being one of the strongest characters in the Arrowverse. And while Leonard Snart and Mirror Master are normally on the same team (with the former frequently leading the Rogues), it looks like their reunion will not be a pleasant one. It will be interesting to see whether Snart's return is easily explained due to Flashpoint, or whether something else entirely is going on. Either way, it will be great to have Captain Cold back in Central City -- at least until he starts wreaking havoc with the Legion of Doom.
The Flash season 3 continues next Tuesday with ‘The New Rogues’ at 8PM on the CW.
