A trailer has been released for the upcoming straight-to-DVD/Blu-ray psychological thriller entitled The Experiment. The film is a remake of the 2001 German-language film Das Experiment, and the plot entails a group of 26 test subjects who enter a simulated prison system, half of them playing the guards while the other half are the prisoners.
The original film is actually based on a book called Black Box (itself originally inspired by a real life experiment), and it's certainly one of those plots that provides a pretty blank slate for lots of tense interactions and social commentary. The original German film is fascinating and genuinely tense and it looks like they've captured that sentiment in the remake.
Take a look at the trailer for The Experiment below so you can judge it for yourself:
I don't know about you but I found that trailer to be tense, thrilling and filled with what looks like a crackerjack performance from Adrien Brody (who's currently playing a macho leading in Predators). It really surprises me that Columbia Pictures has decided to dump The Experiment straight-to-DVD, as it stars two Academy Award winners, Brody and Forest Whitaker.
I know the film isn't exactly a blockbuster and it's definitely not the easiest of sells, but I doubt it cost that much to make and I think there's a theater-going audience out there who would eat the film up. I'd certainly go and see it, wouldn't you?
Oh well, let's look at the bright side - with The Experiment going straight onto stores shelves instead of hitting theaters first, at least it means we'll get to own it that much quicker.
The Experiment is released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 21st, 2010.
