A 13-minute gameplay preview for zombie game The Day Before has been released, showing much more of the world and many of the dangers it possesses. The video showcases what the more rural area outside of the game's city looks like; while it certainly looks less chaotic, danger still lurks around every corner and The Day Before's tension doesn't dissolve. The survival MMO will involve driving, looting, and clearing out homes, but many details about developer FNTSTIC's game have still yet to be revealed.

The Day Before was revealed earlier this year, and the immediate reaction was that it resembles a cross between The Last of Us and The Division. Its inspirations are fairly clear, as The Day Before even uses a similar title card to Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic single-player game, and the grizzled, survivalist shooter focus draws obvious comparisons to Ubisoft's The Division. Despite those similarities, it appears They Day Before may do a lot to set itself apart. Whether or not it can actually match them in the final release remains to be seen, but the steady stream of gameplay trailers seem to prove FNTASTIC is confident in what its making. Although its gameplay focuses far more on survival elements, FNTASTIC has previously noted that The Day Before was inspired by Animal Crossing in many ways, but that hasn't been shown as prominently quite yet.

A new 13-minute gameplay demo of The Day Before released by IGN gives a first look at how the game's quieter countryside looks and plays. Although this gameplay preview focuses far more on the survival elements, FNTASTIC has previously noted that The Day Before was inspired by Animal Crossing in many ways, but that hasn't been shown as prominently quite yet. This new video highlights the importance of vehicle maintenance, looting, and being mindful of surroundings. After driving around for a bit, the two players in the demo stumble upon an abandoned farm where the players trigger a security alarm that they fail to disable. This quickly attracts unwanted attention from both zombies and other players.

The demo seems to continue to reinforce that The Day Before will have a very interactive and reactive world. Having otherwise normal things like house alarms turn into a life or death situation certainly raises the stakes for the gameplay. Whether or not it can actually live up to the quality on display in these very controlled gameplay slices in the final release remains to be seen, but the steady stream of gameplay trailers suggests FNTASTIC is confident in what its making. The Day Before is entering a hotly contested genre, though, as DayZ creator Dean Hall recently revealed his new game, Icarus, which has its own lofty ambitions and has received a fairly positive response so far.

Despite FNTASTIC claiming this is in-game footage, there is still concern regarding if an indie dev who has consistently made much smaller games can deliver something that lives up to what's currently being shown. Gaming communities have burned by games that promised too much and delivered much less, so the healthy skepticism should come as no surprise. Hopefully, a beta or hands-on impressions from press will come sooner rather than later to prove or squash any doubts about The Day Before.
