The long-awaited first trailer for The Dark Tower has been rated ahead of its release. When Sony Pictures first announced it was to adapt Stephen King's epic The Dark Tower series, fans were overjoyed to see the project finally come to fruition. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel and starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey as Roland Deschain the Gunslinger and Randall Flagg the Man in Black respectively, The Dark Tower movie has the potential to launch a huge line of sequels and tie-in TV series, if this first movie is a success, that is.
On paper, that success should be a given; a talented director and cast, great source material and a ready-made fanbase who are all eager to see this movie come to fruition after years of development hell at various studios. However, the actual making of The Dark Tower has been beset with problems, having its release date shifted from February 2017, to July, and finally to August, in order that more time can be given to special effects. Not only that, but promotion for the movie has been very thin on the ground, with only a few images and one poster released. At last, just three months out from release, the first trailer for The Dark Tower has been rated and is set to arrive this coming week.
Trailer Track are reporting that Consumer Protection BC have rated 2 Dark Tower trailers (thought to be the same one but in 2D and 3D formats), which points towards it playing in front of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it's released in North America on May 5th. Given the large numbers expected to attend Marvel's latest offering, that can only be a good thing for Sony Pictures, who really need to invest some serious time and energy into promotion of the movie if it's ever going to succeed.
Early footage shown at CinemaCon was received very well by critics, with Elba and McConaughey both praised for their performances, though it was noted that even at that stage, some effects still weren't finished. Hopefully, all has now been rectified, and the full-length trailer will put fans minds at ease.
The Dark Tower spans seven original novels by King, as well as an accompanying comic book series, so there is potential there for multiple spin-offs. Roland Deschain is the last gunslinger in Mid-World, and is on a quest to reach the Dark Tower. He is both pursued and in pursuit of, the Man in Black. He is also accompanied by a young boy from our world, called Jake, and the pair can cross worlds at various points, jumping back and forth in time, as well. Fans of the books will notice that the movie doesn't even touch on the addition of Eddie and Susannah to Roland's Ka-Tet (family), so that is defiantly something that could be explored, going forward. For now, though, get ready to meet The Gunslinger.
