The Dark Tower: First Footage Coming in October

Hollywood has long been adapting the literary work of Stephen King onto the big screen, and next year will bring another one of his series to life. The Dark Tower continues the tradition of having big names attached to star with the likes of Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba set to play the two leads. With Elba as Gunslinger and McConaughey as Man in Black, director Nikolaj Arcel has the talent around him to help bring audiences to the theaters to see the adaptation.

Set photos have already revealed the looks for not only Elba, but also McConaughey, and while that might be enough for some fans, there has yet to be any footage shown for the movie. If you are one of the people anxiously awaiting the arrival of a trailer, then the latest bit of information surrounding the movie has given a targeted date.

On the homepage for EW popfest, a special event being thrown by EW running from October 29th through the 30th, they have revealed that they will unveil the first look at the upcoming film. There is no word on what the "first footage" will be, leaving the door open as to how lengthy of a reveal this could be. With it just being described as footage and not a trailer, it is possible that a single scene could be shown to generate buzz for the movie. The important thing to note is that EW popfest is an in person event and there has been no indication as to whether or not the footage will be released online or not.

'The Dark Tower'

If this report is correct and Sony plans to wait until October to release any footage for the movie, that would leave just around four months from the first look to the theatrical release. That would certainly leave the movie a small window to build up the recognition for general audiences, but that is not necessarily mean it will not be a hit. The Dark Tower has enough of a name recognition between the title itself, the stars, and Stephen King to make people interested in seeing it. The question will become just how much they want to see it. Matt Damon's The Great Wall opens the same week and it follows both The LEGO Batman Movie and John Wick: Chapter 2, all of which should be marketed towards the same audiences as The Dark Tower.

With that many potentially big films aiming to hit theaters in what was previously thought to be a dumping ground for studios' lesser offerings, could this mean a change in the release date for the latest King adaptation? The film has seemed to be on a tight schedule from the get-go, and while there've been no reports that it has had any adverse effects on the production, one has to wonder if it or any of the aforementioned films will shift to a less crowded release date.

The Dark Tower is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on February 17, 2017.
