The 1996 supernatural horror movie The Craft became a cult classic when it came to teen dramas and dark witchcraft. It told the story of four outcast teen girls who worship a deity named Manon. Their new powers come with some consequences they can't control.

In 2020, it was announced that the cult classic would get a sequel/reboot titled The Craft: Legacy. But, after one watch it becomes obvious that the new installment doesn't tie into the first movie as one would expect. There are some key similarities, as well as the return of one major character, but there are also some shifts in the magic-filled storyline that deter from the 1996 movie.

Similarities: The Craft Book

The craft book in The Craft: Legacy and in the original movie

If there's one thing that needed to stay in the sequel movies, it was where the main characters learned their magic from. In the original movie, the four main characters have learned how to use magic through various witchcraft books from a local shop. When Sarah (Robin Tunney) arrives, they revisit the shop.

The shopkeeper sees that Sarah isn't like the rest of her friends. She gives her some reading material that might help in the form of a book called "The Craft." In the sequel movie, when audiences are first introduced to three of the main characters, they are using the same book to try and perform their rituals. It's a nice nod to the original movie.

Difference: More Detailed Powers And No Manon

Tabby using her powers and Lily in the tub in The Craft: Legacy

The original movie had the characters performing magic in ways that weren't so mystical; they would perform spells that would simply come true the next day. The 2020 rendition definitely kicked things up a notch or two.

Their magical powers are much more whimsical in nature. They can see each other's auras, and one can even summon fire from her fingertip. Above all, the new young group of witches can freeze time. Something the original movie characters could never imagine doing. At the end of the movie, they even manifest balls of power. They also never mention worshipping Manon, which is a huge figure that leads to the destruction of the group in the 1996 movie.

Similarities: The 4th Member

The coven practicing magic in The Craft:Legacy

The Craft starts with the arrival of Sarah in town. Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Bonnie (Neve Campbell), and Rochelle (Rachel True) have already been acting magic users for quite some time before her arrival, but they can never get their magic to work because it calls for the power of a fourth member. They have no luck in finding one. They soon see Sarah levitating a pencil and persuade her to join their coven.

The same idea happens in the sequel movie. Frankie (Gideon Adlon), Tabby (Lovie Simone), and Lourdes (Zoey Luna) can't get their magic to work to stop time. Frankie shows them the book stating they need the power of a fourth member. They tried to communicate telepathically to see if someone would respond, and, one day in school, the new girl Lily (Cailee Spaeny) hears them in her mind. In both movies, Lily and Sarah have immense natural power outside of the coven.

Difference: Lily's Story Tweaks

Lily with her mother and new stepfather in The Craft: Legacy

Lily is the equivalent of Sarah from the original movies. She's the new girl in town who didn't know that she had magical powers, but she always had an inclination due to bizarre things happening to her. She finally meets a group of friends who can somewhat understand her. In the original movie, Sarah only lives with her father after the death of her mother, but the sequel has Lily be with her mother, a psychiatrist.

There's an interesting difference compared to the original. Lily and her mom move to town to be with her new stepfather, and the new stepfather comes with three sons, who become her stepbrothers. In the original, Sarah is much more isolated than Lily. There's also a surprise twist to Lily's backstory that will be discussed.

Similarities: Nancy Downs

Nancy Downs in 1996 movie and in The Craft: Legacy

At the end of the first movie, Sarah binds Nancy so she cannot harm. She becomes consumed with the powers given to her by Manon and starts to abuse them. After Manon revoked her powers, she's seen in a psychiatric hospital. This is one of the major ways that the sequel ties to the original movie.

It's revealed that Lily was adopted. Her mother tells her the truth that one of her patients suffered a traumatic event and was assigned to her, and she promised to take care of the baby. At the very end of the movie, Lily goes to visit her real mother, who is shockingly proving to be Nancy Downs. This explains why Lily has natural abilities and why she wore a necklace with the symbol from The Craft book.

Difference: Use Of 21st Century Topics

School bully and Timmy crying in The Craft: Legacy

The original movie dealt with a couple of tragic issues when it came to the main characters. Rochelle was bullied by her peers for the color of her skin, and Bonnie was seen as unattractive due to an accident that left her with burn marks on her back. Nancy was seen as an outcast and had an abusive home.

The sequel dealt with other issues related more to the present time, these being of sexual orientation. Audiences first see a student bullying another for his feminine way of dressing. The coven then performs a spell to change the bully's jacket into the colors of the LGBTQ flag. There's also the storyline of Timmy being bisexual and confiding in the coven about his experience with Lily's stepbrother.

Similarities: Levitation And Using Their Powers

Levitation scene from The Craft: Legacy and the 1996 movie

Their newfound powers come with some cool perks they test out. Much of the magic scenarios and spells closely resemble the ones from the original movie, with the major one being them trying out levitation. The original movie also had this cool spell by saying "light as a feather, stiff as aboard."

Interestingly enough, the sequel also mimicked the storyline involving Chris Hooker (Skeet Ulrich). Chris was the school's popular guy who at first embarrassed Sarah and has beef with the rest of the coven. The coven performs a spell to make Chris obedient and obsessed with Sarah. In the sequel, the same idea happens to Timmy Andrews (Nicholas Galitzine), but Timmy became friends with the coven.

Difference: Cult Vibes

Adam holding a meeting with cult group in The Craft:Legacy

The original movie didn't really have an antagonist. The real evil was within the very coven when they start abusing their powers. The sequel deviated from this idea and gave the main characters a real physical enemy. It all starts when they learn that Timmy committed suicide.

After the funeral, Sarah's mother tells her that she knew all along about her powers and wants them. Lily realizes it's not her mother and shapeshifts into her stepfather, Adam (David Duchovny). Her stepfather and sons are part of a pagan-like cult, with Adam being a warlock after Lily's powers. Timmy informs the rest of the coven about his murder, and they arrive just in time to stop Adam and save Lily.

Similarities: The Snakes

Snake in The Craft:Legacy and Nancy with snake in 1996 movie

This is a small similarity that makes sense when realizing why Lily has such a strong natural power. In the original movie, Nancy sacrifices a small snake in the ritual to invoke Manon. Later on, when the coven turns against her, Sarah's house becomes infested with snakes.

It just so happens that snakes also appear in the sequel movie. First, when Lily arrives at Adam's house, a snake approaches her on the lawn and scares her. She even becomes entranced by the same snake owned by one of her step-brothers.

Difference: The Cult's End Story

The coven taking a polaroid in The Craft:Legacy

A nice aspect of the sequel is that the coven is much more level-headed than that of the original movie. Having gotten more immense powers from Manon and from Sarah being the fourth, the coven starts to abuse their powers—especially Nancy. When Sarah tries to stop them, they turn against her.

This leads to a chilling battle and Manon stripping Nancy, Rochelle, and Bonnie of their powers, but the sequel had a better friendship bond in the coven. The coven originally binds their powers and alienates Lily when she performed a love spell on Timmy. But, they come to her rescue when she's facing peril from an enemy.
