The first teaser trailer for The Conjuring spinoff, The Nun debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2017. Based in part on the demonic nun introduced in The Conjuring 2 last year, the upcoming movie will serve as the fifth entry overall in the overarching The Conjuring film franchise. 2014’s Annabelle was the first spinoff of The Conjuring movies to be released in theaters (back in 2014) and it will be followed by next month’s release of Annabelle: Creation. On top of all that, The Crooked Man – another spinoff based on a monster that was introduced in The Conjuring 2 – is also currently in development.
Director Corin Hardy is now officially done filming The Nun, with its 2018 theatrical release date firmly set in stone. The upcoming movie will feature starring turns from The Hateful Eight cast member Demián Bichir and American Horror Story veteran Taissa Farmiga. The film’s teaser trailer is expected to be released online next week (or, at least, before Annabelle: Creation hits theaters), following its SDCC premiere showing.
According to Deadline, the teaser trailer for The Nun debuted as part of a “Scare Diego” marketing campaign for all the upcoming theatrical releases from Warner Bros.’ label New Line. Alongside more footage from the hotly-anticipated IT adaptation and a special event preview screening of Annabelle: Creation, attendees were also made privy to the first footage from Hardy’s forthcoming The Conjuring spinoff.
Centering around Taissa Farmiga’s performance as Sister Irene, the teaser trailer for The Nun shows the young nun waking up in a Roman monastery to the sight a group of mysterious, dark-cloaked figures, all fervently praying before an altar. As Sister Irene takes a few more unsteady steps towards the mysterious group, one of the figures stands up and approaches Farmiga – only to reveal the face of a shrieking demon that will undoubtedly prove to be familiar to anyone who saw The Conjuring 2.
At the time of this writing this, it is believed that Taissa’s character will have no familial relation to her older sister Vera’s character, Lorraine Warren, in The Conjuring 1 & 2. Either way, Hardy and company definitely sound as though they have quite the fright fest up their sleeves with The Nun. For now, however, fans of the James Wan horror cinematic universe will have to wait to see the teaser for themselves in the days (week?) ahead, along with the aforementioned footage from IT.
