MTV has officially announced the cast of veterans and rookies competing on The Challenge 36: Double Agents, which will premiere in December 2020. This series has been a huge hit for MTV since the show premiered back in 1998. Originally, The Challenge was about bringing together alumni from shows like The Real World and Road Rules. Over the years, however, MTV started to expand its casting process and seek out contestants from Are You The One? and Ex On The Beach. Then, as the ViacomCBS merger became closer and closer to becoming a reality, the show started also casting Big Brother, Survivor, and The Amazing Race alumni.

Between April and July, MTV aired The Challenge: Total Madness, which was filmed in the Czech Republic and in Austria. The season featured quite a few The Real World and Big Brother stars. In the end, Johnny "Bananas" Devenanzio (The Real World: Key West) and Jenny West (Survival of the Fittest) ended up winning the show. In 2014, MTV introduced the Free Agents format for season 25. Some fans had been asking the show to bring back this format for many years, and it seems like MTV has finally listened. It is now official: the upcoming season of The Challenge will be basically Free Agents 2.0.
