The Boys Twitter account takes aim at the Synder Cut and the Spider-Man: No Way Home re-release. Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic book series of the same name, The Boys is a satirical take on the superhero genre. The existence of the Seven, Vought International's premier superhero team, is an obvious example of such. Its members, such as Homelander, The Deep, Queen Maeve, and A-Train, are direct parodies of Justice League superheroes Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash.
The Boys season 2 takes its Justice League parody one step further with its in-universe team-up movie titled Dawn of the Seven. The movie openly mocks the theatrical cut of Justice League by hiring someone named Joss to rewrite the script. The Boys continue the running joke by revealing Dawn of the Seven underwent extensive reshoots and even references a Bourke cut. The Dawn of the Seven movie doesn't let the MCU off scot-free, as it parodies The Avengers' Battle of New York, Scarlett Johansson and Disney's Black Widow lawsuit, and whether by design or mere coincidence, Charlize Theron's surprising cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Now, The Boys is continuing to take aim at DC and Marvel. The show's Vought International Twitter account jokingly announced that Dawn of the Seven is getting "re-re-released" and in the process, took a few shots at Zack Snyder's Justice League and the Spider-Man: No Way Home re-release. The Boys' Digs At The Snyder Cut and No Way Home Re-Release Explained
Like many of their past parodies of DC and Marvel, The Boys' shots at the Snyder Cut and No Way Home re-releases are thinly veiled. The "4:3 black and white version" is a direct reference to the Snyder Cut which was released on HBO Max in that aspect ratio. Later, a black and white version was also released, officially titled Zack Snyder's Justice League: Justice is Gray. Shifting gears to the MCU, “the fun cut” is a reference to Spider-Man: No Way Home's More Stuff Version, an extended cut with about 13 minutes of extra footage that Sony released in theaters at the beginning of the month.
The Boys' searing satire is especially relevant given the plethora of re-releases that currently plagues not only the superhero genre, but the film industry at large. At the current time, Avatar is the latest re-release to hit theaters, which is already the highest-grossing film of all time at $2.8 billion. With filming on The Boys season 4 currently underway, it will be interesting to see how the show continues its pitch-perfect parody of the superhero genre.
