Chace Crawford, who plays The Deep in The Boys, says he didn't think the notorious dolphin scene would actually be included in season 1, episode 4. Crawford's character is one of the most deeply disturbed in The Boys, among a motley cast of characters filled with neuroses, personality defects, and mental issues. He is one of The Seven, a group of so-called supers who work as superheroes for hire under the auspices of a mysterious organization called Vought. In season 1, which was a surprise hit for Amazon Prime last year, the group comes up against the titular Boys, led by Karl Urban's Billy Butcher, who attempt to expose their corruption and wanton destruction of public life and property.

The Boys, produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and adapted from the comic book series of the same name, delights in subverting expectations about the superhero genre, drenching its characters in blood and guts throughout the series. In one particularly bloody and memorable scene, The Deep, who can communicate with sea creatures, kidnaps a dolphin from a local aquarium in an attempt to free it. Unfortunately, on the way to releasing it, he collides with a truck and sends the dolphin flying through the windshield of his van, ending up with the dolphin being splattered across the road.

Speaking to Comicbook.com about the scene, Crawford reveals he wasn't sure it would work and questioned whether it would make the final cut. However, he adds that once the crew found a convincing enough animatronic dolphin to pull the scene off, his fears were quieted. He finishes by saying that when they shot the scene, he realized it would be a hit with fans due to the laughter coming from the video village where the crew sits. You can read his full comments below.

I didn't know that it was gonna be that [popular]. I was worried that they were gonna cut it. To be honest, I was worried that it wasn't going to work or something. And somehow they found this animatronic dolphin in Los Angeles, and had it shipped and there was two guys like pumping it, moving these levers and moving it and they are spritzing it down I'm spritzing it down and ... When I heard the video village crack up over there I'm like you know, we might be on to something at least, where it's gonna work.

Chace Crawford as The Deep in The Boys

Besides the shock factor, The Boys also features a number of in-depth emotional characters, ranging from Homelander (Anthony Starr) a hybrid of Superman and Captain America with a deranged, violent personality, to Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), a sweet-natured but broken young man who witnessed his girlfriend's death at the hands of a super.

The dolphin scene certainly stands out among all the other shocking moments in season 1, but it seems like The Boys season 2, which will be released on September 4 on Amazon Prime Video, is going to up the ante where blood and guts are concerned. A clip from season 2 showing The Boys decimating a whale that The Deep is riding has already been released, promising that the new batch of episodes will be more outrageous than season 1. With the addition of a number of super-powered terrorists and the revelation that Butcher's wife gave birth to Homelander's child, The Boys season 2 is set to be a wild, violent and emotional ride.
