Amazon's spin-off series for The Boys has been confirmed with a new set of showrunners. Based on the Garth Ennis comic of the same name, The Boys became an instant hit for Amazon and earned an Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Drama Series. The series primarily focuses on the conflict between the superhero team, The Seven, and the titular team, The Boys, a group of normal individuals who have a vendetta against superheroes.
The success and popularity of the first two seasons of The Boys led Amazon to greenlight a spin-off series. First confirmed in September 2020, the series set Craig Rosenberg (The Boys and Preacher) as the series showrunner. The series was confirmed to be based on a college run by Vought for superheroes and how the various heroes attending the school compete for contracts. The series later announced its cast and that it would draw inspiration from the X-Men parody in the comics, The G-Men.
According to The Wrap, Amazon has officially ordered the college spin-off of The Boys to series. Agent Carter alums, Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, will serve as the new showrunners for the series, as original showrunner Craig Rosenberg has stepped down due to creative differences. The Boys series creator, Eric Kripke, released a statement regarding the news of the series and what fans can expect. The statement can be read below:
“Much like ‘Mork & Mindy’ spun-off from ‘Happy Days’—which is an insane and true fact—our spinoff will exist in the Vought Cinematic Universe, yet have a tone and style all its own. It’s our take on a college show, with an ensemble of fascinating, complicated, and sometimes deadly Young Supes. Michele and Tara are stone-cold geniuses, we’re thrilled to have them steer this ship, and grateful to Sony and Amazon for the opportunity. We love this show and can’t wait for you to see it. Also, ‘Baywatch Nights’ spun-off from ‘Baywatch,’ and it had vampires. Vampires!”
Kripke's press release hints that the spin-off of the series of The Boys will be very different from the current series despite existing in the same universe. The college-based setting could position the series to tell very different types of stories, similar to college films like Animal House within the context of a superhero story. Previously described as similar to the tone of The Hunger Games, fans can certainly expect a great deal of violence and gore that has come to be expected from The Boys.
The Boys season 3 has recently wrapped filming, with a premiere date likely set for 2022, meaning the spin-off series most likely will not arrive until late 2022 or 2023. The upcoming season of The Boys will lay the groundwork for the upcoming spin-off series with subtle hints. Amazon could be doing a similar move that Disney+ is doing with their Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka all confirmed to be leading to a massive crossover event series. The Arrowverse series feature a number of crossovers, and it appears that Amazon could be laying the groundwork for The Boys and the upcoming spin-off to interconnect and crossover in the future. Superheroes who appear in the spin-off could graduate and become members of The Seven on The Boys.
