Caution: spoilers ahead for The Boys season 3

The Boys’ Karen Fukuhara discusses her surprise when reading the script for season 3’s premiere and realizing her mute character would sing. Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic of the same name, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys first introduced Kimiko Miyashiro in season 1, episode 4, “The Female of the Species.” In a series where everyone has something to say, The Female prefers to communicate with her hands—whether that means snapping necks or using a unique type of sign language she developed with her brother.

Season 1 establishes a relationship between Fukuhara’s character and Tomer Capon’s Frenchie before season 2 delves into a tragic backstory, which saw Kimiko and her brother kidnapped and experimented on with Compound-V. Following Queen Maeve’s blackmailing of Homelander in the season 2 finale, season 3 episode 1, “Payback,” begins 12 months later during what can perhaps be described as a time of peace. Frenchie has been using this time to show Kimiko what she’s been missing in life. The premiere finds them at a party, where Kimiko starts to sing “Dream a Little Dream of Me” while watching a woman play the piano.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Fukuhara talked about that unexpected scene in The Boys’ season 3 premiere. While the actress does have a musical background, she never anticipated her mute character would in a show that’s more often concerned with murder and mayhem. Read her full quote below:

“It was really surprising when I read the script. I really did not anticipate any kind of singing in my film and TV career, and then suddenly it happens to my mute character. It was shocking, to say the least, but so much fun to work on. I used to be part of an acapella group, so l kind of came full circle.”

“But it was so much fun to film that day. On a show like The Boys, we’re always covered in blood and desperately trying to go on a mission or survive. Having a scene like that, where everyone's smiling and there are literal flowers in the air, was quite enjoyable.”

Kimiko in a dark room looking serious in The Boys

Kimiko bursting into song was a memorable moment and audiences likely didn’t peg it as just a daydream until a car horn jolts her out of it. Then, it’s back to the chaos as Kimiko annoyingly tries to learn “Dream a Little Dream of Me” on the piano. The scene epitomizes the episode’s “calm before the storm” or, in the case of The Boys, the calm before the Ant-Man-meme-inspired termite scene. While Kimiko singing is surely one of season 3’s most beautiful moments thus far, it’s safe to say it isn’t the most shocking.

As The Boys delves deeper into everyone’s trauma and mixed feelings regarding superpowers, fans should get even more emotional scenes with Kimiko. On top of that, Fukuhara's theater background will be further put to use in an upcoming episode. Fukuhara and Capone have confirmed that season 3 features a full-on musical/dance number with their characters—which will likely be another dream sequence of sorts. The first three episodes of The Boys season 3 are available to stream now and new episodes debut on Amazon Prime Video every Friday.
