Somehow we here at Screen Rant managed to miss the trailer for Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly's newest film, The Box. That's what sometimes when happens when we're hard at work trying to stay on top of all this movie news at once! Nonetheless, we thought you, our readers, might have missed it too (if you only visit SR for your movie and TV news, you probably did) and so we have it here for your late viewing pleasure, along with some fresh pics.
Based on the short story "Button, Button," by Richard Matheson, the plot for The Box is as follows: Norma (Cameron Diaz) and Arthur Lewis (James Marsden), a suburban couple with a young child, receive a wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences. A mysterious stranger delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. However, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world.
Kelly has a track record of films with all sorts of strange twists and turns (on top of Donnie Darko, he did the very weird and wacky Southland Tales), and so I imagine the conclusion of The Box's plot will turn out to be a lot stranger than what you might initially expect. Whether the premise has you interested yet or not, take a look at the aforementioned trailer for The Box, as well as some new images:

I really like the trailer for The Box - it's fittingly strange and off-beat with a weird sense of foreboding danger that I can't quite put my finger on. Although I have to say, I don't like the use of the Saw theme music, as well as the fact that the trailer makes it look like more of a thriller than it probably is (that's just me guessing, though). The pics (along with the trailer footage) are surprisingly sleek and polished - going by the premise that's not how I'd imagine it would look. I guess the cinematography (by Steven Poster) is just another reason to look forward to this film.
Even if there's been some negative early buzz on The Box, I'm still very much looking forward to it, mainly because of who's writing and directing it. Kelly was responsible for one of my all-time favorite movies, Donnie Darko, which is so unique, distinctive, intelligent, peculiar and overall so well done (particularly for a feature debut) that I automatically give its creator the benefit of the doubt with any future projects. I have to admit I actually liked Kelly's next feature, Southland Tales, although I FULLY acknowledge its many flaws - it may just be my personal liking for weird movies that made me dig it. I even enjoyed the bounty hunter film he wrote (but didn't direct) called Domino, which starred Keira Knightley and Mickey Rourke.
What do you think of the trailer and the new images from The Box? Do you think it will deliver on its potential or will it be more Southland Tales than Donnie Darko?
The Box hits theaters on November 6th, 2009, in the U.S., and on December 4th, 2009, in the UK.
