Robert Pattinson shares how wearing the Batsuit for The Batman audition changed his experience as he tested for the role. The Caped Crusader is getting reimagined once again, this time through director Matt Reeves with Pattinson donning the cape and cowl. While Bruce Wayne's origin story has been told multiple times on-screen, The Batman will instead focus on the hero's second year being Gotham City's fierce protector. The reboot will be a heavy noir-detective story, following Batman trying to stop The Riddler (Paul Dano), who is being imagined as a Zodiac-inspired serial killer.

Prior to being cast as the lead, Pattinson needed to audition for The Batman to make sure he was a right fit for the part. As part of the process, he did screen tests in old Batman movie costumes, donning Val Kilmer's Batman Forever suit and George Clooney's Batman & Robin costume. Those iterations of the Batsuit are very different from the one Pattinson wears in The Batman, but putting on the earlier costumes was a key part in completely changing the actor's audition.

As The Batman is approaching its theatrical release, Pattinson has been sharing more insight into his whole experience, from auditioning for the role to shooting the reboot. In a new interview with Den of Geek, the British actor spoke about his audition process and his own expectations. According to Pattinson, once he put on the Batsuit, it changed everything that he had in mind prior to going in for the audition, sharing the following:

“I went into that audition [and] you have the whole concept of how you want to play it. [But] you put on the suit and it’s just everything goes out the window. And you can’t do anything, and you’re just pouring sweat, and it was luckily an incredibly long audition. You had time to calm down, but the combination of the adrenaline, the fear, and then being so boiling hot, it seemed like a completely impossible task.”

Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman

Just like the Dark Knight himself, the Batsuit has been reimagined multiple times in live-action, both on the big and small screen. While it's subjective which one is the best iteration, the costume definitely put things into perspective, especially for the actors donning them. Past actors who have played Batman have made it clear that it's not the easiest superhero outfit to pull on, whether it's a rubber suit or a tight armor. In Pattinson's case for his The Batman audition, it sounds like suiting up for his test helped him, despite being uncomfortable.

Based on all the trailers and promotional photos for The Batman, the reboot is exploring something different with Pattinson's first suit. Given that Bruce is still early on in his vigilante career, Pattinson's costume should be regarded as a prototype. As Bruce continues to find himself as a crime fighter, that means his Batmobile, gear, tech, and uniform will evolve throughout the new franchise. This has even been the case in the comics as Batman has gotten further into his journey as Gotham's infamous detective. With The Batman getting closer to finally getting released, it will be exciting to see the new Batsuit in full action.
