Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Batman.

The one detail that could be labeled a plot hole in The Batman can be explained by the themes the Riddler exposes throughout the movie. Matt Reeves' The Batman has been praised not only as a faithful adaptation of Batman's lore, but also as a solid movie in terms of script, music, and cinematography. It then comes as no surprise that the movie has no major plot holes to speak of, as even the mistakes the characters make throughout the story don't happen because of a narrative oversight, but due to their personality and state of mind.

In The Batman, every main character is clearly starting their journey as a hero, anti-hero, or villain. This is why Batman himself is still struggling with his own tech, his reputation, and even his detective skills. Similarly, Jim Gordon isn't experienced enough to stay one step ahead of the Riddler, and the villain's plan has some weaknesses that Batman is able to exploit. But in retrospect, one mistake made all of them seem like complete rookies.

The pictures of Carmine Falcone and Annika that the Riddler put in the thumb drive were taken from his own apartment, from where he ultimately assassinated Falcone using a sniper rifle. Falcone's death led Batman and the Gotham PD to raid the Riddler's apartment and find the biggest clues to Riddler's final attack, as well as everything he used to prepare. Given that both Batman and the Gotham PD were in possession of the pictures of Falcone and Annika for a while by this point, it's odd that neither of them investigated the place the pictures were taken from. There's a small chance they could have saved Annika and caught the Riddler earlier had they searched his apartment early on. However, the incompetence of the GCPD in this instance only makes the story more solid, as it proves how busy most of the experienced cops were getting their hands dirty with Gotham's crime empire instead of doing their job.

Both Gil Colson and Pete Savage were taken out before they could contribute their skills to the fight against the Riddler, but even if they had escaped the Riddler's traps, it's unlikely they would have cared enough to focus on the little details. The reason why Batman is allowed at crime scenes is that he gets the job done better than many members of the GCPD, or at least that he has a better eye for detail. Their incompetence is part of why Gotham is filled with criminals, and their failure to investigate the photos more carefully proves why the city struggles so much with rampant crime.

As for Batman, it's true that he should have analyzed the angle the pictures were taken from, at least as a formality. He also had a second set of eyes in Alfred, a third one in Jim Gordon, and a fourth in Selina Kyle. Such an oversight would have been a considerable mistake from a seasoned detective like Ben Affleck's Batman, but the fact that Robert Pattinson's Batman and his allies were mostly improvising makes it easier to digest. All in all, The Batman still shines for its lack of actual plot holes or jumps in logic, and the fact that every character makes occasional mistakes brings it all closer to reality.
