The Batman is coming, although he'll look a little different. The new movie, due in 2021, will be directed by Matt Reeves and star a new, younger Batman. Ben Affleck was originally going to write, direct and star in the movie, but stepped away from the project following Justice League. Reeves' version of the movie features a "rogues gallery" and will be a hard-boiled noir detective movie. It's still unclear who will be playing the new Bruce Wayne, but it's expected to be a more youthful take.

Ben Affleck Will Be Replaced By a Younger Actor
After over a year of back-and-forth rumors, it was officially confirmed that Ben Affleck would not be donning the cape and cowl of the World's Greatest Detective, Batman, in the Matt Reeves Batman movie. Affleck's relationship with the Batman role was tumultuous after the brutal reviews for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and behind the scenes drama with Justice League, so his exit does not come as a surprise to many.
It's not yet known who will replace Affleck, but they will likely be an actor in their 20s or early 30s, as Reeves' Batman script will focus on a younger version of the character.
The Batman's Supporting Cast Hasn't Been Revealed
The Batman's supporting cast hasn't been revealed so far, nor are there any indications as to who will appear in the movie. Previous supporting cast members like Jeremy Irons, who plays Alfred Pennyworth, and J.K. Simmons, who made his debut as Commissioner Gordon in 2017's Justice League are unlikely to return due to the timeline shift.

The Batman Will Feature Multiple Villains
The Batman was originally supposed to feature Deathstroke as the titular villain, played by Joe Manganiello, but that was when the story was being written by Ben Affleck and DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns. Now that Matt Reeves is starting over from scratch, Manganiello is unlikely to be a factor anymore, and instead, Reeves' movie is said to have a "rogues gallery," suggesting Batman could confront a number of his most famous foes. Reeves also specified no actors have been cast yet.

The Batman's DCEU Connections Are Unclear
Matt Reeves previously claimed The Batman is part of the DCEU, but at the same time, it's being billed as a standalone story. With the DCEU focusing more on individual characters and less on a shared universe, it may not matter as much, but fans will certainly be curious to know if this new Batman will be a younger version of the same character portrayed by Ben Affleck, or if his future is yet to be written.

Then, one month after Affleck left his directorial duties behind, Warner Bros. hired Matt Reeves to direct The Batman.
