Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker gets the perfect introduction in a The Batman fan edit video. Matt Reeves' DC movie was released in theaters earlier this year and satisfied hardcore fans of the Dark Knight. Similar to Frank Miller’s seminal comic Batman: Year One, the film explores the early vigilante career of Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Robert Pattinson starring in the title role. In addition to Pattinson, The Batman stars a handful of villains from his rogues’ gallery, including John Turturro's Carmine Falcone, Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman/Selina Kyle, and Colin Farrell’s Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot.

The Batman’s main antagonist is Paul Dano’s Edward Nashton/The Riddler, a serial killer targeting Gotham City’s elites and leaving clues for the “World’s Greatest Detective.” For example, Riddler’s first victim is Mayor Don Mitchell Jr., whose body is found wrapped in duct tape with the message “No More Lies.” In the grounded, gritty, PG-13 (nearly R-rated) world of The Batman, Dano’s antagonist is an outcast wronged by a corrupt system, who takes it upon himself to expose that system to the public.

Now, Magician on Twitter shares a The Batman fan edit that introduces the Joker from Tod Phillips’ 2019 film, Joker. The video sees Batman and Selina Kyle watching a news report - not of Riddler’s torture of commissioner Pete Savage, as in the original, but of Arthur Fleck’s murderous appearance on Live! With Murray Franklin. Check it out below:

Not unlike the Riddler - an orphan who inspires droves of followers online - Phoenix’s Joker goes from a mentally ill failed comedian/party clown to an inciter of mass mayhem. While certainly not as tactical or meticulous as Riddler, Arthur Fleck nearly destroys Gotham (does destroy the Wayne family) with his anarchic message. It’s not hard to imagine the R-rated Joker working in The Batman’s world. Unfortunately, Arthur Fleck exists in a 1980s version of Arkham Asylum (rather than present day), and Reeves’ universe already has its own take on the Clown Prince of Crime.

At the end of The Batman, Riddler is befriended by a shadowy figure (Barry Keoghan) who says there are worse things than being a clown. While audiences naturally assumed this character to be a younger Joker, Reeves’ later confirmed his identity by releasing a deleted scene, which sees Batman consult Joker early on in the film, à la The Silence of the Lambs. Although it remains to be seen if Keoghan’s Joker will appear in The Batman 2 or any spinoffs, Phoenix's character is returning in Joker: Folie A Deux alongside Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. Suffice to say, if that duo did exist in The Batman, Pattinson would be doing more than dancing.
