New images from The Batman 2022 show off another look at Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne, both masked and unmasked. The Batman is the newest iteration of the iconic DC Comics character, who has appeared in various forms across every possible pop culture medium since his debut in 1939. The new film, which was directed by Matt Reeves, has branched away from the DC Extended Universe, which has most recently had Ben Affleck fill the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Affleck will still be appearing in the role alongside Michael Keaton as an alternate universe's Batman in the upcoming 2022 film The Flash, so the Pattinson continuity is on a divergent path from the world of 2017's Justice League.

The Batman has also recast every other major character from Batman lore. Zoë Kravitz is Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright is Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis is Alfred Pennyworth, and this film's villains, The Riddler and The Penguin, will be played by Paul Dano and Colin Farrell, respectively. The cast will be filled out by John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Jayme Lawson, Barry Keoghan, Alex Ferns, Gil Perez-Abraham, Charlie and Max Carver, Rupert Penry-Jones, and Con O'Neill. The Batman will swoop into theaters on March 4, 2022.

Empire just dropped two new exclusive images from the film that show Robert Pattinson's Batman has been put through the wringer. Both images show the caped crusader completely drenched, but the first shows him wearing his signature cowl in the dark. The second shows an unmasked Pattinson, equally soaked. It is unknown exactly how he ended up in this condition, but both images appear to be from the same scene, given the similar architectural structure in the background, meaning this is probably a glimpse at the new film's Batcave. The Batman will follow Pattinson's Batman in his second year of fighting crime, so while they might still show his origin story, that won't be the primary focus of this particular film. While chasing down The Riddler, he will discover a vast conspiracy of crime in Gotham City that ties in with his own family. He will be forced to make uneasy alliances to help save the city, most likely with Catwoman, who has most recently been seen in a live-action film played by Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises.

These new images from The Batman are revealing, but they still leave plenty to the imagination. It seems like Bruce Wayne has survived a major scrape that left him somewhat worse for wear. Whether this was a confrontation in the rain or involved a mishap on the docks that sent him plunging into the water remains to be seen. Whatever happens, it's sure to be thrilling.
