The Batman’s costume designer Glyn Dillion reveals more than 20 alternate versions of the bat symbol for Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader. Following Ben Affleck's departure from the Batman solo project and Pattinson’s subsequent casting, Matt Reeves’ blockbuster was released in theaters on March 4. Bridging the gap between old, new, panel, and page, The Batman has proven itself a worthy and fresh addition to its respective franchise.
Inspired by comics like Batman: Year One and The Long Halloween, the rebooted title focuses on a younger Bruce Wayne in his second year as Batman is still figuring out what it means to be a symbol in Gotham City. After serial killer Riddler (Paul Dano) begins targeting Gotham’s elites, Batman is forced to investigate the corruption of his city, aided by Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz) and James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright). Now that the film has been out for well over a month, fans are getting a look behind-the-scenes of the epic via books and interviews with its creatives, who put a lot of effort into the design of Gotham, its villains, and, of course, its hero.
Costume designer Dillon recently took to social media to share unused treatments for The Batman’s bat symbol. In addition to the concept board featuring 24 different logos, Dillon also shared concept art for Pattinson’s suit, eye makeup, gloves, and grappling hook. Check out the post below:

In some form, the bat symbol, along with the batmobile, cape, and cowl, is ingrained in the minds of audiences around the globe. Whether it be Michael Keaton's in Tim Burton’s films, the more modern one sported by Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, or Affleck’s inspired by Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, the bat symbol has been a cornerstone of popular culture for quite some time. Like The Batman’s world and main character, Pattinson’s symbol is overtly practical and effective. Rather than being shaped by the gun that killed Bruce’s parents—which was a popular Batsuit theory—Pattinson’s emblem doubles as a glauca knife.
It’s interesting to see what could have become of The Batman's bat symbol. Some of the designs are reminiscent of beloved iterations like Batman Beyond and similar to the end product while others are completely different. However, every variation seems to have one thing in common: outstretched, overt, and violent bat wings. While this may be a departure from the proportionate wings found on past bat symbols, it makes sense considering how the physical emblem on Batman’s suit is also a knife. Presumably, an emphasis was put on the wings when this idea came to fruition. Regardless, even those who disliked the reboot have accepted the new symbol as faithful. For those who haven’t seen it in action, The Batman is currently playing in theaters and will drop on HBO Max on April 18.
