Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson collaborated to introduce an introspective interpretation of Batman on the big screen, presenting the opportunity for the live-action debut of another decorated detective in The Batman 2, Vic Sage. Born as Charles Victor Szasz, the Hub City native doubles as The Question, a masked vigilante known for leaving a calling card bearing the inquisitive punctuation mark. Although Vic Sage's current comics iteration has been imbued with magical properties like shapeshifting, teleportation, and even immortality, harking back to his DC Comics origins would be a shrewd choice should James Gunn and Peter Safran strive to incorporate The Question into The Batman 2.

Just as The Batman 2 is set up for Robin to make his DCU debut, the film is also poised for the inclusion of other street-level DC characters like Vic Sage. The Question first appeared in Charlton Comics' Blue Beetle #1 in June 1967. Created by Steve Ditko, Vic Sage was established as an investigative journalist with a particular flair for combatting corruption by any means necessary. While the character has since been further explored in titles like Justice League Unlimited, Vic Sage is yet to appear in live-action, and Matt Reeves' proven ability to direct a neo-noir superhero film paves the road for another iconic detective in the DCU.

The Question Is Perfect For Matt Reeves' Version Of BatmanPattinson's Batman with one of Riddler's hand drawn question marks.

Although The Question has been altered significantly since his inception, the character's detective roots, initial lack of superhuman abilities, and inherently similar background to Batman cement Vic Sage as an ideal choice for The Batman 2. Batman is portrayed as the ultimate detective — a depiction that was evident in Matt Reeves' The Batman — but this is arguably only the case due to Bruce Wayne's immense financial resources. Further, Vic Sage's investigative intellect is unmatched in DC comics, even compared to Wayne's. The two characters also share similarly troubled upbringings, both orphaned at a young age, with neither possessing supernatural powers.

Vic Sage's emergence as another iconic detective in the DCU would also align perfectly with the grounded version of Gotham that Reeves crafted in The Batman. Sage accomplishes what he can through legal procedure, but is also willing to enact questionable measures to achieve his own personal version of justice when constrained by societal shackles. This diligence and duality perfectly mirror Bruce at the end of The Batman, when he comes to the realization that for Gotham to improve, the city not only needs Batman's legally dubious escapades — but more importantly — Bruce Wayne's ability to utilize his legitimate public persona and impactful influence as a force for good.

A Vic Sage Appearance Could Open The Door For Other Street-Level DC Characters

In addition to the evident character and tonal similarities shared between Reeves' Gothamverse and The Question, Vic Sage's introduction into the DCU could act as a catalyst for appearances from other street-level DC Comics characters. Batman and The Question do not posses a storied history in the comics, but Sage does have connections with Batman-adjacent figures like Renee Montoya and Huntress. Montoya even briefly dons the mantle of The Question in the comics, sporting Sage's trademark faceless mask. Rosie Perez has already portrayed the Montoya in Birds of Prey, but it's hard to say whether there will be any subsequent follow-up to that film in conjunction with the new DCU.

The Batman was one of the best movies of 2022. It's imperative for Gunn and Safran to capitalize on the potential that Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson exhibited in bringing their incarnation of the Caped Crusader to life by reinstating the pair for The Batman 2, while still guiding a holistic long-term vision for other characters. Reeve's affinity for nuanced noir can continue to shine with a film that features a sleuth-style story and introduces another iconic detective into the DCU, Vic Sage's The Question.
