Colin Farrell discusses if he would return for The Batman 2. Originally perceived as a solo vehicle for Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader, with the actor attached to write, direct, and produce, The Batman was ultimately reworked by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves who removed the movie's connections to the larger DCEU. Reeves rechristened the film into a genre-bending psychological superhero crime thriller, focusing on Batman's detective side and his early years of vigilantism in Gotham City. Twilight alum Robert Pattinson led Reeves' movie as Bruce Wayne, with Farrell, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis appearing in key roles.

After several delays posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, The Batman finally hit theatres in March 2022, becoming a quick hit among fans and audiences who praised its gritty cinematography, compelling performances, thoughtful exploration of societal inequity, and critical dissection of Batman's heroism. The movie also proved decidedly profitable, grossing over $770 million worldwide. Its success prompted WB and DC to greenlight a sequel, which was officially announced during April's CinemaCon. Pattinson and Reeves have signed to return for The Batman 2, although a similar commitment from the other actors is yet to be confirmed.

Now, speaking with ET, Farrell revealed that he would definitely come back to reprise his role as The Penguin in The Batman 2 if he is offered the opportunity. The actor expressed that he has been in Hollywood for a while, but his time working on The Batman was exceptionally enjoyable. Read what he said below.

"Oh my god, you kidding me?! It's so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I've been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean ... it was a joy."

Farrell's new comments echo the sentiments of his co-star Dano, who earlier expressed his wish to reprise his role as The Riddler in The Batman 2. This interest from the A-listed cast members demonstrates their confidence in Reeves' direction while reflecting on the enriching experience they encountered during production on the movie. Farrell blew fans away with his incredible transformation and scene-stealing performance as a grounded take on The Penguin in The Batman. Many regard his character as the best and most realistic live-action rendition of the iconic villain, and if Farrell does get the chance to appear in the sequel, he will undoubtedly up the ante on the movie with his deadpan delivery of dry wit and subtle sight gags.

Since development on The Batman 2 is in the early stages, it's hard to guarantee that Farrell will return for the movie. The Batman didn't portray Farrell's Penguin as the crime overlord he is in the comics. Rather, it focused on the build-up for The Penguin's rise to power, setting him up for a larger arc later on. But before a sequel can revisit his story, Farrell will set to chart The Penguin's adventures in The Batman spinoff centered on his character. The show has already been ordered to series at HBO Max, with both Reeves and Farrell executive producing. Reeves has indicated that the spinoff series will air before The Batman 2's premiere. So it's possible that the show might progress The Penguin's story from where the original movie had left off, eventually transforming him into a more menacing threat for the sequel. Such a scenario is highly likely. But to know for sure, viewers will need to wait for an official confirmation from either the star or the director.
