The Batman 2 director Matt Reeves explains how the upcoming sequel will avoid a Bruce Wayne problem that other Dark Knight movies have had. Released ealier last year to strong reviews from audiences and critics, The Batman introduces Robert Pattinson's take on the Caped Crusader. The film sees Pattinson's hero forming a tentative alliance with Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) to take down the Riddler (Paul Dano) after a series of attacks on the city . Not long after the success of the first film, The Batman 2 was officially confirmed with Reeves returning as co-writer and director and Pattinson returning as the titular DC superhero.

Following his recent comments affirming that he and Mattson Tomlin are hard at work on The Batman 2 script, Reeves now reveals in an interview with Collider that the upcoming sequel will avoid a past Dark Knight sequel mistake. Without going into too much detail regarding what he and Tomlin are cooking up, Reeves assures fans that the movie won't lose sight of Bruce Wayne as the emotional core of the story being told. After all, villains like Heath Ledger's Joker, Tom Hardy's Bane, Jack Nicholson's Joker, and Danny DeVito's Penguin have all, to a certain extent, become the star of the show in past Batman movies. Check out Reeves' full comment below:

“To me, the thing that I really feel is that I also believe that Rob [Pattinson] is so special in the role. My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story. Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.”

What The Batman 2 Could Be About

The Batman 2022 Robert Pattinson as Batman flying through the air on his grappling hook

Right now, the plot of The Batman 2 is anyone's guess, but the ending to the first film could provide some hints as to where Reeves and his co-writer will take the story. Although Dano's Riddler is ultimately apprehended and sent to Arkham by the end of the movie, his plan still partly succeeds – part of Gotham City's seawall is destroyed and the city is flooded. It's not clear if The Batman 2 will feature a time jump, but if it doesn't, it could very well pick up with Gotham still in a state of emergency. The city being flooded could provide an opportunity for new criminals to rise that Pattinson's Batman will have to take down.

When it comes to villains, Reeves' sequel has a number to choose from. Although only briefly glimpsed in the theatrical release of The Batman, a subsequently-released deleted scene fully introduces Barry Keoghan's Joker, Riddler's Arkham cell neighbor. It's possible that the sequel will see the Joker escape his prison to serve as The Batman 2's main villain, but Reeves could also take the movie in an entirely different direction. Some fans have expressed interest in seeing Mr. Freeze brought to life in Reeves' Batman universe, while others have suggested that maybe Hush or Scarecrow would be an interesting addition. The Court of Owls could also represent an interesting new force for Pattinson's hero to face off against, with the organization having not yet been brought to life in live-action.

Many questions remain about The Batman 2, but Reeves comment affirms that Pattinson's character will remain the emotional focal point of whatever stories are yet to come. Reeves comment doesn't, however, rule out a larger than life villain or the return of Kravitz's Catwoman, who was a big hit in the original film. With Reeves still in the writing stage, it will likely be quite a while before fans find out more concrete information about what he has planned in The Batman 2.
