Now that, after 11 years, the MCU's Infinity Saga is out the way, there's an infinite number of great moments to look back on from the last 22 films. Regarding elements such as character development and fan service, some of the Avengers movies delivered more on these aspects than others. The same can be said for pacing, cinematography, and comedy. Marvel Studios needed to pack a lot of these elements into a 2-hour space, and given the number of characters, this is an extremely challenging task for any studio.

It is often underestimated how hard it is to make a good movie, and sometimes some elements have to be left out in order to make room for others. Let's take a look at a couple of elements we feel each movie did better with than the others.

Avengers: Assemble - Hulk's Transformation

Avengers: Assembled is the only MCU film (aside from Hulk's solo movie) that we see Bruce Banner fully transform into the hulk - twice! In Avengers: Age of Ultron we only see a brief shot of his hand and a blurred sequence of Banner stumbling through the forest, and his other transformation is off-screen after Natasha pushes him off the ledge to stop them from abandoning the fight. Avengers: Infinity War only gave fans the tail end of Hulk transforming back into Banner in the New York sanctum, and Hulk was notably absent from the rest of the movie. And fans never saw Banner's transition into 'Smart-Hulk' in Avengers: Infinity War or  Avengers: Endgame.

The only other MCU movie that potentially tops Avengers: Assembled in this regard is his transformation back to Bruce Banner in Thor: Ragnarok after seeing Black Widow's message in the Quinjet.

Avengers: Assemble - Nick Fury

Nick Fury

As the head of S.H.I.E.L.D and the main cause of the Avengers becoming a team, Nick Fury was notably absent or played a much smaller role in Avengers 2, 3 and 4. Avengers: Assembled showed Nick Fury being not only in some ways the leader of the team, but also the first one to call them out and make them realize the importance of the mission when they needed it. In Avengers: Age of Ultron Nick Fury was in hiding due to the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier but turned up at the Barton farmhouse and saved the Sokovians in the heli-carrier at the end, but his involvement was less than that of the first movie.

Nick fury's only appearance in Avengers: Infinity War was the post-credit scene where he was a victim of 'the snap' and then appeared at Tony Stark's funeral in one of the final scenes in Avengers: Endgame. As a fan-favorite character, it would have been nice to see Nick in more of a leadership role throughout the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But when these big ensemble movies have so many characters and plot points to hit, some things must be sacrificed to better serve the story. Not to mention we also got a large amount of Nick Fury in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Avengers: Endgame was over 3 hours long without adding additional Nick fury scenes. With the character still alive in the MCU, we may see him in future Marvel projects.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron - Foreshadowed The MCU To Come

Avengers: Age of Ultron foreshadowed what was to come more than the first Avengers movie. This was due to the main purpose of the first movie not being to foreshadow the MCU to come, but rather to show the Avengers coming together for the first time to become something more than each hero individually.

Once the main team was established, Marvel now had an already established team of heroes and could delve into the foreshadowing of what the team was going to eventually face down the line. Thor's vision in the reflection pool gave fans a full glimpse of not just Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet, but the events of Thor: Ragnarok and Cap arguing with Tony over his creation of Ultron planted a seed for Captain America: Civil War.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron - Hawkeye's Character Development

Hawkeye Family in Avengers Age of Ultron

Fans of Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye made it very clear that they felt he was misused in Avengers: Assembled, understandable given that for 70% of the movie he was nothing more than Loki's hitman. However, Joss Whedon, director of Avengers: Assembled and Avengers: Age of Ultron, delved right into Hawkeye's character development in the 2015 sequel by revealing that he had a wife and kids.

The Avengers used the Barton family farm as a safe house after they were attacked by Ultron. Many fans speculated that Hawkeye was going to die in the sequel and the introduction of his family was to make his death more emotional.

Avengers: Infinity War - Comedy

Marvel Studios is known for its light-hearted movie style, even within its darkest of plots, and has comedy sprinkled throughout its entire cinematic universe.

Even though there are many comedic moments in the first and second Avengers movies, such as Thor's "he's adopted" line, Tony catching the SHIELD agent playing Galaga on-board the heli-carrier, and even Ultron stating "I can't physically throw-up in my mouth," the comedic moments in Infinity War (between Star-Lord and Iron Man, Drax's newly discovered invisibility, and Tony Stark mistaking Ebony-Maw for Squidward) easily take the cake.

Avengers: Infinity War - Pacing

The story of Avengers: Infinity War is told in such a way that you can tell that many of its scenes could easily be flushed out into a mini 20-minute episode of a short 'Infinity War' Netflix show. For example, Thor taking Rocket and Groot to Nidavellir to obtain a new axe could have easily been fleshed out into a much longer sequence if Marvel wanted it to, but this scene, amongst others, were shrunk down and condensed the main parts of the mini-story the Russo brothers wanted that scene to tell. The final battle sequence certainly did not feel like it was rushed at all, and came out as satisfying as ever.

Avengers: Endgame - Fan Service

Avengers: Endgame was the film that Marvel fans had been waiting for in many ways. Generally speaking, fans that have read the comic books make up a very small percentage of the movie-going audience. Therefore, Marvel's main task is not to make the best cinematic copy of what was written on the pages, but to make the best movie they can for the general audience, while at the same time pleasing the die-hard passionate fans that have read the source material.

Elements such as Smart-Hulk, Hawkeye's Ronin arc, Worthy Cap, and Pepper's 'rescue' armor were all nods to the comics. But the final coming together of every single Avenger and hero to face Thanos' army was largely satisfying comic book and general movie fans alike, while giving us the scene we had all been waiting 11 years for.

Avengers: Endgame - Cinematography

Avengers: Endgame had, arguably, some of the most cinematically beautiful shots in the MCU. Just a few examples include Captain America standing on his own in front of Thanos and his army, the trinity of Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America about to face 2014 Thanos for the first time together, and the portals sequence.

The Russo brothers who directed both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame filmed both using IMAX cameras which gave them a larger aspect ratio so fans could see more of the surroundings in the movie. They were also tasked with not just making two Avengers movies back to back, but closing an 11 year, three-phase arc of storytelling.
