The Americans' Alison Wright Joins TNT's Snowpiercer

The pilot for TNT's upcoming Snowpiercer TV series casts The Americans' Alison Wright in a major role as one of the train's occupants.

Snowpiercer with Alison Wright

TNT's Snowpiercer just added Alison Wright to the cast as a series regular. The new show was ordered to pilot by TNT in November and continues to add notable names to the cast of characters. The show will center around the same premise as the acclaimed 2013 thriller of the same name, which was adapted from the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige.

The show is adding plenty of new faces to the characters, which promises a level of freshness despite following the same story about a post-apocalyptic world in which the only remaining humans are aboard the Globe-circling Snowpiercer train. Jennifer Connelly has been cast as one of the show's stars, as well as several supporting actors. You can now add Alison Wright (The Americans) to the list.

As reported by Deadline on Thursday, Snowpiercer has cast Wright in the role of Lilah Anderson. She is described as a "careful and quiet but a pragmatic and independent thinker." Annalise Basso had previously been cast as Lilah's daughter L.J. Lilah will be a fourth-class passenger who lives with L.J. and her husband and works in the nail salon. Wright is best known today for her role as Martha Hanson on The Americans, and has also appeared in recurring roles on Feud and Sneaky Pete.

Wright joins Connelly as Melania Cavill, a first-class passenger and the "voice" of the train who speaks over the P.A. system. According to Deadline, Benjamin Haigh (The Conjuring 2) has also been cast as Fergus McConnell, who lives in poverty at the back of the train and has to take care of his sick parents. Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson is slated to direct the pilot.

The Snowpiercer movie garnered widespread acclaim for its combination of a unique premise, striking visuals, and strong performances to go with its perpetually relevant underlying social and political themes. Derrickson has proven that he has the ability to deliver a stunning visual movie with his work on Doctor Strange, and having an accomplished veteran actress like Connelly at the top of the cast certainly bodes well.

Of course, there's still plenty of uncertainty surrounding the pilot. TV adaptations of movies don't always work as well as shows like Fargo have, and there will be pressure to live up to the standard set by the movie. But at the same time, the pilot will be working off acclaimed source material and has strong high-end talent at the helm. Wright is the latest solid addition to a growing, talented cast.

TNT's Snowpiercer is expected to premiere sometime in 2018.
