Second Trailer For 'The American'

A second trailer is now online for George Clooney's upcoming assassin thriller, The American.

Focus Features has released a second trailer for their upcoming dramatic thriller, The American, which features George Clooney as a professional killer whose dexterity allows him to assemble makeshift weaponry with a level of precision that even Jason Bourne might bat an eye at.

Here's the official synopsis for this new George Clooney vehicle:

Alone among assassins, Jack (Clooney) is a master craftsman.  When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry (Bruce Altman) that his next assignment will be his last.

Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell.  The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten), is in the offing as a weapon is constructed.

Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of the local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues romance with local woman Clara (Violante Placido).  But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

This new trailer for The American is kind of generic in its construction, placing more emphasis on the thriller aspect of the film and less on its ominous atmosphere and gloomy visual style.  On the plus side, neither this latest trailer nor the impressive first trailer make Clooney's latest look like a cheap Bourne Identity knockoff, which could have easily been the case.

Still frame from The American movie

Personally, this film reminds me of the 2008 film Traitor, which was also a decent globe-trotting dramatic thriller that starred a well-respected actor (Don Cheadle).  Of course, that film owed a big shout-out to the Bourne series' shaky-cam cinematography and "smart" action flick feel.  The American looks to be more of a visually unique, character-driven piece than Traitor was - not to mention that Clooney is usually pretty good when it comes to choosing his leading man roles.
