Donna notably dated Casey Kelso in That ‘70s Show season 4, which will have a perfect connection to That ‘90s Show’s big teenage romance. That ‘90s Show follows Donna and Eric’s daughter Leia Forman as she returns to Point Place to stay with Red and Kitty for the summer. In addition to Donna and Eric briefly reuniting with their old friends Kelso, Jackie, and Fez in That ‘90s Show, Leia will become friends with the Point Place teens who have close connections to her parents. Not only is Leia’s friend Gwen living in Donna’s old bedroom, but Jackie and Michael’s teenage son Jay Kelso will become more than just a friend to her over the summer.

The Kelsos are arguably the most enigmatic family of That ‘70s Show’s Point Place, though only three members of the bunch were actually seen in the original series. One was main character Michael Kelso (Ashton Kutcher), the pretty but not-so-smart playboy who notably dated Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis) – who is now his wife in That ‘90s Show – and Eric’s sister Laurie Forman throughout That ‘70s Show. The other two Kelsos previously seen were Michael’s father and his older brother Casey, a charming but senseless ex-military man who dated Donna and broke her heart in That ‘70s Show season 4. That ‘90s Show brings another Kelso to the forefront, though Jay must overcome the reputation of his male family members.

Leia Forman & Jay Kelso’s Romance Calls Back To Donna Dating Kelso’s Brother

That ‘90s Show’s trailer reveals that the new Donna and Eric will be their daughter Leia and Michael and Jackie's son Jay, who just so happens to be a Kelso. While Donna and Eric will likely be happy for their daughter finding someone she really likes, they’re apt to be reluctant to accept that her new romantic interest is part of the Kelso family. Donna and Eric both remember first-hand how poorly Casey Kelso (Luke Wilson) treated Donna when they dated, with even more bad memories from when Michael Kelso was cheating on Jackie with Laurie Forman. Given Donna and Eric’s family history with the Kelso men, Jay has a big obstacle in trying to overcome Casey and Michael’s reputations.

It wouldn’t be surprising if That ‘90s Show’s episode in which Leia and Jay go on their first date is titled “Leia Dates a Kelso,” which would directly connect to Donna and Casey’s date in That ‘70s Show’s episode “Donna Dates a Kelso.” Donna and Casey’s storyline made dating a Kelso look disastrous, but That ‘90s Show is apt to reverse That ‘70s Show’s subplot by making Jay a good boyfriend to Leia. Nonetheless, Leia dating Jay will inevitably give Donna bad flashbacks of dating Casey, so it’ll be extremely difficult for Jay to get approval from Leia’s parents.

Leia Dating Jay Repeats Red’s Frustration With Laurie & Kelso

Not only does Jay and Leia’s romance pay off Donna and Casey’s storyline, but it will also build on Red’s disappointments regarding Laurie Forman dating Michael Kelso in That ‘70s Show. Kelso and Laurie were sleeping together for a while during the time he was still dating Jackie, with Red Forman detesting that his daughter would date a Kelso. Red knew about all of Kelso’s misdeeds with women, especially with Laurie, so he won't be happy that his granddaughter Leia is dating one of Michael Kelso's children in That '90s Show.

However, Leia is much more like Eric than Laurie, so Red should understand that she wouldn’t date a guy who treated women as poorly as Michael Kelso did in That ‘70s Show. Red will certainly roll his eyes at yet another Kelso man dating one of the women in his family, but at least he can try to keep watch over them while in the Forman household.

Leia & Jay’s Romance Can Undo That ‘70s Show’s Kelso Family Reputation

That ‘70s Show didn’t leave a great reputation for the Kelso family, but Jay has the potential to change the perception of the bunch in That ‘90s Show. Perhaps the most difficult mind to change will be that of Red, as he once asked Eric whether Kelso’s parents were “as dumb as he is.” Leia's father Eric replied in the affirmative, with Red responding, “Right answer. That was a trick question. I know they’re dumb.” Red won’t be too happy to have another Kelso boy in his basement every day, but the more time that Jay spends with him in That ‘90s Show, the more he can change the perception of Kelsos as unintelligent womanizers.

It’s unlikely that Michael Kelso has matured significantly since That ‘70s Show’s ending, but being able to hold a job, raise Jay, and remain married to Jackie may have earned him more respect in Red’s eyes. Since Casey and Michael did much to tarnish the Kelso reputation in Point Place, the stakes are high for Jay to make returning characters Donna and Eric trust him to be respectful to their daughter. After 15 years, That ‘90s Show may do the impossible by introducing an entirely new and respectful conception of the Kelso boys.
