One original star from That ‘70s Show almost declined to return for Netflix's That ‘90s Show. Focusing on the teenage daughter of Eric and Donna as she goes to live with her grandparents for the summer, That '90s Show featured several appearances from That '70s Show actors. Along with Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith in their respective leading roles as Kitty and Red Forman, original cast members Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Wilmer Valderrama are among those who make at least one appearance in the ten-episode reboot.

However, in an interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Valderrama, who played Fez, admits he was hesitant to reprise his memorable role as part of The '90s Show cast. The actor, who currently stars in the long-running CBS show NCIS, says that he'd retired the distinctive Fez voice and promised he wouldn't return to it. Soon after, Valderrama talks about how he changed his mind once he saw what the reboot would be about. See what he said below:

“You come around so many years later, you get an opportunity, and you get this phone call saying, ‘Hey, they’re bringing the band back together, and it’s the same writers and the same producers and all of that. Will you be open to playing Fez again?’ And I had to really think about it because first and foremost, I was like, ‘Can I still do the voice?’”

“I had sworn and literally promised myself that I would never do the voice again because it was just time for my next chapter and becoming what I need to be at that time, I said, ‘I’m never gonna do it again.’ Even at the tipsiest of me, you couldn’t even get me to do it. We had to come up with a great storyline. They asked me, ‘Where do you think Fez would be if he was in the ’90s?’ And I said, ‘He’d be the Paul Mitchell of Wisconsin,’ And they loved the idea so, obviously, that’s where the fabulous hair comes from.”

Fez Has One Of The Best Stories In The '90s Show

Valderrama's reluctance to revisit Fez is understandable, given how he's since moved on to other projects and performances. Still, of the returning '70s Show characters, at least those who played the younger characters in the original, Fez has the best story. In the years between the original show and the reboot, he's become a successful businessman and a small local celebrity.

Valderrama is tied with Prepon, who makes three guest appearances as Donna, and he makes the most of it. The '90s Show explains what happened between Fez and Jackie and how it broke Fez's heart that she reunited with Kelso. He also has a new relationship with Sherri, played by Andrea Anders, as a new addition to the cast. Though they probably don't have the healthiest relationship, they seem to make each other happy.

With Netflix renewing the spinoff series, The '90s Show season 2 will likely focus even more on the newer character like Eric and Donna's daughter Leia (Callie Haverda). But if there's room to explore more returning That '70s Show favorites, such as Fez, it would be a welcomed choice. Despite more than a decade away and Valderrama's concerns, they're still able to slip into their old roles.
