Netflix has ordered a spinoff of That ‘70s Show, titled That ‘90s Show, and two original stars are set to return. Released in 1998, That ‘70s Show aired on Fox for eight successful seasons. Focusing on the lives of a group of teenage friends and their trials and tribulations while residing in the suburbs of Wisconsin, the comedy series officially signed off in 2006.

Starting in the mid-'70s, an era filled with 8-tracks, bell-bottoms, and the release of Star Wars, That '70s Show centers on Eric Forman (Topher Grace), who lives with his parents Red and Kitty, and his relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Donna (Laura Prepon). Considered one of the most successful sitcoms on Fox, That '70s show also starred Danny Masterson as Hyde, Mila Kunis as Jackie, Ashton Kutcher as Kelso, and Wilmer Valderrama as Fez. In 2002, Fox launched That ‘80s Show, which was inspired by That '70 Show. However, the series failed to gain traction and only aired 13 episodes. Now, it appears Red and Kitty will help to raise a new generation.

Per Deadline, Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of That ‘90s Show, which will feature the return of Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp in their roles as Red and Kitty Forman. Helmed by showrunner Gregg Mettler, That ‘90s Show will follow Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric and Donna, who is visiting her grandparents in Point Place, Wisconsin for the summer. Set in 1995, That '90s Show will see Leia come of age “under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red,” according to the series’ official logline.

That '70s Show

Slated to feature a fresh batch of teenagers and their misadventures during a time when O.J. Simpson’s trial captivated viewers, the Macarena went viral, and overalls were popular, That ‘90s Show will air exclusively on Netflix. At this time, That '90 Show has yet to reveal who will play the main character, Leia. Written by original series creators, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, That '90s Show could leave the door open for numerous original cast members to return, especially with Red and Kitty anchoring the series.

Of course, That ‘90s Show can offer an update on what the beloved original characters have done since That '70s Show signed off, even if they don't make an appearance. Furthermore, the creative forces behind the spinoff can easily work around the inevitable absence of Hyde, as Danny Masterson is currently embroiled in legal troubles. For now, fans of That ‘70s Show, as well as a new generation of viewers, can look forward to the familiar faces of Red and Kitty while reliving the pop culture, fashion, and influences of 1995 in the upcoming That '90s Show.
