Marvel's Eternals are soon returning to the comics. However, anyone expecting the immortal heroes to get off to a quiet start will be sorely mistaken. In a new trailer for Eternals #1, Thanos has arrived and he wants to ensure that he's the last remaining Eternal in the entire galaxy.

Thanos has a deep connection to the Eternals, as he's a descendant of the alien race. Unlike his brother Eros (Marvel's Starfox), Thanos was born with the Deviants gene, which mutated what would be his human appearance into a purple, monstrous villain. Thanos has been absent in the pages of Marvel Comics for a little while now (he was last seen getting sucked into a black hole in Guardians of the Galaxy), but it appears he'll be returning in a big way - as a new trailer from Marvel Comics suggests.

In the trailer for Eternals #1 by Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine) and Esad Ribic (Thor), eager fans get a closer look at the Eternals and their reintroduction into the Marvel Universe. The series will bring back a number of Jack Kirby's Eternals characters while also introducing some new faces into the fold. But, as the Eternals try to figure out just who they are and how they fit into the galaxy, Thanos will be stopping by to ensure their return is ended just as soon as it began.

"All that lives will die. When I am done, there will a single thing that is eternal. Death," Thanos laughs as he stares into the face of Ikaris with a menacing smirk on his face. Speaking with Marvel.com, Gillen said the book will feature plenty of "action, romance, and philosophy ideas." He says working on books such as The Wicked + The Divine and Once and Future has given him some great ideas on how to "make a universe really pop."

It's truly exciting to see the Eternals get their own series as they've long been overlooked and forgotten in the modern Marvel Universe. They are one of Jack Kirby's more out-there, bombastic creations, as the original series was part space adventure and part Shakespeare. It seems Gillen and Ribic are using the same playbook Kirby employed while building an exciting universe of their own. Throwing Marvel's most terrifying villain into the mix should certainly shake things up in what was already looking to be a promising series. Eternals #1 will be in comic book shops and available online on January 6.
