Thanos The Mad Titan will be making his return to the Marvel Universe in the upcoming Eternals series. On Tuesday, Marvel revealed the cover for Eternals #2 with Marvel's biggest villain being showcased on the front for the issue. Thanos' return isn't necessarily unexpected, but considering how he previously died in the comics, it's definitely somewhat surprising to see.

Thanos, who is the descendant of Eternals, was born with the deviant gene that transformed him into the monster most are familiar with. Thanos was last seen in the Guardians of the Galaxygetting sucked into a black hole along with Hela. Thanos was thought to be killed in the incident, but, like in most comics, no hero or villain ever stays truly dead. Thanos will next show up in Eternals #2 as he will battle with Ikaris as the Eternals are seemingly misplaced in time.

In a brand new preview, Marvel revealed that Eternals #2 by Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic will bring the series' main hero Ikaris face-to-face with Thanos after one of his own has died. According to the new preview, Thanos will play a "monumental role" in the future of the Eternals series. In the brand new cover by Ribic, Thanos can be seen with a menacing smile as he watches Ikaris float over a seemingly crumbling city.

The series, which was announced last month, will be a reboot of the characters originally created by Jack Kirby. The series plot has been teased as a "war for all time" as the Eternals will make a shocking discovery - perhaps, Thanos? Marvel has put a lot of effort into redeveloping the Eternals for their own ongoing series ahead of the Chloe Zhao-directed Eternals due for release next year. Adding Thanos to the mix not only works within the lore of the Eternals, but also adds one of Marvel's most iconic character to a series that will feature characters that casual fans might not be familiar with.

The question remains: is this the same Thanos who was killed in Guardians of the Galaxy? Or, does this story take place thousands of years before he met his end at the hands of Gamora? Fans will find out more as the series draws closer, but including Thanos should excite readers even more who have long craved for an Eternals series. It's clear the comic is going to have massive implications on the Marvel Universe as a whole. Check out the solicit for issue 1 of the series below.
