Jim Starlin wants to see more of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After his prominent appearance in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the future is bleak for the Mad Titan. But if it's up to the character's creator, Marvel Studios should keep bringing him back in future films in the franchise.
Marvel Studios had been teasing Thanos as early as 2011's Thor, but he didn't make his official introduction until 2018's Infinity War. Instead, he appeared in minor roles, primarily in post-credit scenes and a glorified cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy. Fortunately, the villain was worth all the wait as he proved to be worthy adversary to Earth's Mightiest Heroes after he succeeded in his goal of wiping out half of life in the universe. While he was ultimately defeated in Endgame, Thanos made a mark in the MCU, and Starlin wants to see more of him in the franchise.
Speaking with Popcorn Talk Network at San Diego Comic Con, Starlin says that Marvel Studios should bring Brolin back to reprise his role as Thanos. According to the legendary comic book creator, there's still so much the franchise can do with the villain especially with Adam Warlock coming in soon.
“You know, they’ve made so much money off him, I can’t believe they're not gonna do it again, and I know Josh Brolin, who originally said he was a one-off, has since then he’d like to do more...They bring the Warlock into it and that leads to the Magus, and Thanos is part of the Magus Warlock story, so it's a possibility that we’ll see him that way...I’m mentioning it now so it will put a bug in somebody’s ear up there at the studio.”
It's no secret that Starlin was thrilled with what Marvel Studios did with Thanos. He was even invited on the set of Infinity War and Endgame during production just to show him what they're planning for the villain. After that, Starlin was vocal about the good experience. Assuming that Marvel Studios is still tinkering on bringing the Mad Titan back, it won't be that difficult to rope Brolin back in since he's more likely going to stick around as the MCU absorbs the Deadpool franchise where he plays Cable. The actor himself recently revealed that he's been asking about what lies ahead for his mutant character, proving that he's interested in continuously playing him.
Starlin has a point, it seems such a waste to not see Thanos back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in any capacity. They've already locked the character's design, so it'll be fairly easy to incorporate him in upcoming films. Chloe Zhao's The Eternals is a good way to potentially bring him back into the franchise, considering that the Mad Titan is an Eternal-Deviant hybrid in the comics. If anything, Thanos may already be dead, but there's still so much that fans don't know about the villain which makes for a great entry point for a new narrative.
