Thanos is Dead, But His HEAD is Missing in Marvel Comics

When Gamora sliced off the head of Thanos to start Marvel's recent Infinity Wars event, many fans expected his death may not be permanent. What they didn't expect was for his body to be stolen in the rebooted Guardians of the Galaxy #1--beginning a universe-wide hunt for his missing head.

Yet that's exactly where our preview of Guardians of the Galaxy #2 kicks off, in the wake of the surprise attack that plucked every cosmic hero from Marvel's Universe, and scattered them across time and space. The only ones left were Star-Lord and his new Guardians of the Galaxy team. Which means they may be the only heroes who can prevent the corpse of Thanos from being restored... too bad Star-Lord is too busy drunk-dialing his X-Men ex-girlfriend to notice.

All things considered that's actually perfectly on-brand for Peter Quill at the moment, considering what he's been through both before and since the drama of Marvel's Infinity Wars. It was bad enough that his other former lover Gamora killed Thanos to become him, and unify the Infinity Stones to remake the universe as she saw fit. But killing Star-Lord along the way (thank goodness for Doctor Strange and the Time Stone) has to leave a mark whether it's 'erased' or not. Oh, and she got Drax the Destroyer killed to finally set the universe(s) back to the way they should be.

The Infinity Wars seemed to be wrapped up by the final issue. But in Guardians of the Galaxy #2, the children of Thanos are out to bring back their daddy... which means that missing skull is suddenly the most dangerous thing in the universe. Take a look at the preview pages embedded below:

The comics are certainly going to be capitolizing on fans of The Avengers: Infinity War, with the Black Order now on a new mission for Thanos - and seeking out The Collector to find out where the skull of their great commander has ended up. Interestingly, the Infinity Wars event itself didn't actually reveal the final fate of Thanos' head. Once Gamora removed it from his shoulders, she tucked it into her bag, and was haunted by his presence and voice from then on. By event's end, the head was missing, with no explanation for where it could be.

The Black Order can't be blamed for seeking out The Collector, since the head of the Mad Titan is certainly the kind of artifact he would want in his display cases. But whatever happens next in this scene seems unlikely to go his way. Marvel fans will need to pick up the full issue on Wednesday to know for sure. Until then, read on for the full synopsis and details below:
