Taking down Thanos is a difficult task, as the Mad Titan is so powerful that he can withstand some of the most brutal attacks thrown his way. But, can Thanos survive the hypersonic scream of Black Bolt, one of the strongest Inhumans in the entire Marvel Universe?
Black Bolt, full name Blackagar Boltagon, first appeared in Fantastic Four #45 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The Inhuman is part of the Royal Family, who live in the secluded city of Attilan. Inhumans are transformed and (sometimes) gifted with powers and abilities through the process of Terrigenesis. Black Bolt's powers are simple but incredibly deadly. He possesses the hypersonic scream, meaning that when he talks he unleashes a tremendously powerful blast capable of destroying planets. Even Black Bolt's whispers can cause serious destruction, as he often doesn't even speak unless the situation is absolutely dire - like the time he battled Thanos.
In Infinity #4 by Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opena, Dustin Weaber, Justin Ponsor, and Chris Eliopoulos, the Inhuman city of Attilan has fallen and Black Bolt's scream has trigged the Terrigen Bomb, which douses the planet with the mist that activates the Inhuman gene. Once Thanos finds Black Bolt amidst the rubble, the two engage in an epic fight. Black Bolt screams at Thanos, sending him back with his voice. Thanos, who wants to get to Black Bolt to find his Inhuman son Thane, pushes through the blast, grabs Boltagon, and demands to know his son's location. Black Bolt answers by sending a powerful scream right at Thanos' face from close range.
The blast is so powerful that it destroys Thanos' armor. However, Thanos doesn't succumb to the scream. Instead, he picks up Black Bolt (grabbing his head like he's palming a basketball) and slams him to the ground. In this particular fight, Thanos beats Black Bolt despite his hypersonic scream. But does that mean Thanos can survive Black Bolt's voice? Sort of.
While Black Bolt's scream was unleashed, it's debatable whether or not the Inhuman actually used his full powers. Remember, Black Bolt can literally level entire planets with his voice. So, it's fair to assume he was holding back against Thanos in an effort to keep Earth in one piece. However, Thanos showed that he can do what few heroes/villains can: He withstood multiple hypersonic screams from Black Bolt and managed to take him down. That's no small feat. If anyone can survive Black Bolt's most powerful scream, it would be Thanos - but fortunately for the Mad Titan, Black Bolt held back in an effort to save the planet.
