Avengers: Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explain the existing Infinity Gauntlet prior to the debut of the apparent real one in the movie. The Infinity Gauntlet was an important plot device for both Avengers: Endgame and its predecessors. It allowed its wearer to wield the power of all six stones at once, making the Decimation possible. However, there are still some problems regarding its canonical history in the MCU, which Markus and McFeely attempt to clarify.

Fans first saw the Infinity Gauntlet inside Odin's (Anthony Hopkins) vault on Asgard in 2011's ThorThis was the reason why MCU viewers were understandably confused when Avengers: Age of Ultron's post-credit scene revealed the Mad Titan opening a contraption and donning it. Marvel Studios tried to explain this continuity error in Thor: Ragnarok, where Hela (Cate Blanchett) explicitly said that the Infinity Gauntlet inside Odin's vault was only a replica, effectively establishing what Thanos had was the real Infinity Gauntlet. Now a different explanation comes from Infinity War's writers themselves - something that the public may not have heard before.

During Infinity War's watch party event, Markus and McFeely provided live commentaries such as talking about additional context and behind-the-scenes information that may delight fans. When asked about the previous sighting of the Infinity Gauntlet before in the MCU, the pair said that there was apparently "an existing myth of a gauntlet that could unify the stones" so as fake as Odin's was, Thanos' "practice gauntlet" was, as well. The Mad Titan brought his version to Eitri as a prototype. Check out their tweet below:

Aside from streamlining their explanation regarding the Infinity Gauntlet's MCU history, Markus and McFeely's comments were also backed up in Infinity War. When Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel) visited Nidavellir, and the God of Thunder noticed another gauntlet lying around. The chances are this was Thanos' "practice gauntlet," which he left after getting a real one that would contain the power of all six Infinity Stones from Eitri (Peter Dinklage). Upon seeing it, Thor immediately got an idea of what happened on the planet, potentially since he'd seen the version of the metal glove in his father's vault.

While this Markus and McFeely's explanation certainly helps in clarifying questions about the existence of the Infinity Gauntlet in the MCU, it also raises some additional questions. For starters, since both Odin and Thanos had fake ones, it's curious which one came first. The pair never encountered each other in the franchise before their deaths - at least that's what's canon thus far. So fans may be wondering who copied who. In conjunction with that, it'll also be cool to know who the original designer of the metal glove was in the event that it's neither of the characters mentioned above.

The Infinity Stones are no longer present in the primary MCU timeline, and the franchise moved on from the Infinity Saga after Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. These new questions may effectively bring the magical gems back at the forefront of their storytelling if Marvel Studios decides to answer them. However, at this point, it appears that the franchise is looking ahead with brand new narratives and characters to focus on Phase 4. This means that any type of answer will come much later - if at all.
