Taron Egerton has been cast in a movie about the complicated history of Tetris. Egerton is one of Hollywood’s brightest young talents, known for playing the lead character in the Kingsman franchise. Additionally, he's been cast in several biopics, portraying a British army officer in Testament of Youth and pop legend Elton John in Rocketman.

One of the best-selling video game franchises of all-time, with more than 200 million copies sold, Tetris has solidified itself as a staple of pop culture since its creation in 1984. Despite the seemingly simple directives, which involve gaining points by moving different shapes to fill vacant spaces, Tetris is renowned for its complexity, and studies have shown the game has lingering effects on the human brain - referred to as the Tetris effect. The new movie, led by Egerton, is set to revolve around the real-life battle over Tetris during a tumultuous period in world history.

Daily Mail reports Egerton will play Dutch video game designer Henk Rogers in Tetris. Rogers secured the rights to distribute Tetris on video game consoles, which helped the game’s popularity. He is also the founder of The Tetris Company, which licenses the Tetris trademark. The film will reportedly delve into the legal battles which took place during the Cold War over ownership of the game. Jon S. Baird, who previously helmed Stan & Ollie, will direct. Filming on Tetris is planned to begin in September, with full safety procedures being taken, as other high-profile actors are courted to join the cast.

Taron Egerton as Elton John

Based on this information, Tetris will likely focus on the disputes between a Soviet computer programming agency and companies run by the late media mogul Robert Maxwell and his son Kevin. After a lengthy back and forth, Rogers was able to secure the intellectual property rights to the popular game for himself and the game’s creator Alexey Pajitnov. Up until that point, Rogers and Pajitnov hadn’t made money off Tetris. Long rumored to be the subject of a movie adaptation, this upcoming film with Egerton looks as though it will be similar to The Social Network in how it will reveal the origins of a brand most audiences will be at least passingly familiar with.

Considering the timeframe in which Tetris will be set, Egerton should have no problem embodying Rogers. While there might not be a strong resemblance between the video game designer and the actor, Egerton has already proved to have an uncanny ability to portray real-life figures. With his star turn in Rocketman, he left fans and critics alike with a strong impression. The performance earned heaps of praise and a Golden Globe victory, with a general agreement that Egerton’s take on Elton John helped to facilitate one of the better musical biopics. While it’s far too early to say whether Tetris will be a similar success, it’s easy to see why Egerton was chosen to lead the project.
