The 2020 tile-matching video game, Tetris Effect: Connected, has finally been updated to include cross-platform multiplayer in a free update. This update will allow players to finally be able to stack titles together on separate screens, upgrading the co-op mode to be more remote-friendly

Over the past few years, Tetris Effect has been upgraded with some major updates, all of which have been free for players who own the game. Initially, the game was a PS4 exclusive, with built-in support for the PlayStation VR added back in 2018. However, since then the game has been released for PC, with support for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. In November of 2020, an enhanced edition of Tetris Effect called Tetris Effect: Connected was released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows 10. Previously, players on certain platforms were limited to playing against others on the same platform. Now in 2021, the game is being updated to allow players to play co-op together regardless of platform.

While cross-play was already supported on all Microsoft platforms, this new update will help bridge the gap between the remaining platforms for remote cross-play. According to a recent tweet by Enhance Games, the publisher of the game, the Public Beta Test will begin on June 23 for Xbox, PlayStation 4, and Epic Games versions of the game. This Public Beta Test will be testing how well the game will be playable with co-op cross-play for multiple kinds of platforms connecting together. This means, in theory, a Tetris player on PS4 and Xbox One will be able to play the game in co-op games together online. The same should work for all the different matchups of platforms on which Tetris Effect: Connected is on.

The update doesn’t just include cross-progression, with a spectator mode in development as well. This mode will allow players in Friend Matches sessions to allow between four to six players to spectate a game of Tetris Effect: Connected. These spectators can even emote in real-time on-screen for all participants to see. In order to participate in this Public Beta Test, users will need a copy of the game and to head to the Tetris Effect: Connected Beta store page. Only a limited number of spots are available in this closed Beta. It will be running from June 23 to July 5.

This is great news for Tetris Effect: Connected fans, especially ones who have been wanting to play the various multiplayer modes with friends but have been unable due to own copies of the game on different platforms. There is no news as of yet for when this update will be released for all Tetris Effect: Connected players. The eventual release will most likely be determined by how this Public Beta Test goes.
