In celebration of Terminator: Dark Fate hitting theaters, a new and extremely detailed T-800 statue has been released. Although it technically marks the sixth installment of the apocalyptic franchise, the new film takes the saga back to the roots first cultivated by Cameron with 1984's The Terminator. Wiping such underwhelming sequels as Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Genisys from the continuity, Terminator: Dark Fate is a direct and belated follow-up to the Cameron-directed sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
Although many fans believe Terminator 2 to have featured the perfect ending - rendering subsequent sequels unnecessary - the return of Cameron as executive producer served to assuage some concerns. That feeling would turn to almost outright excitement when it was announced that both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton would return to reprise their iconic roles. With Tim Miller (Deadpool) assuming directorial duties, the franchise stalwarts are joined by newcomers Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and Mackenzie Davis (Black Mirror) as they fight to either prevent or bring about a ravaged and dystopian future.
In honor of the film's release, Chronicle Collectibles have unveiled a stunningly realized statue of Schwarzenegger as his character: the aged T-800 also known as Carl. Created using 3D assets from Legacy Effects, the sculpture was cast in polyresin with a painted metallic endoskeleton finish. Overall, it stands at 18 inches in height and features a detailed multilayered environmental based. It also includes two endoskeleton arms - one with his hand and one without. "As lifelong Terminator and Arnold fans, this statue is a dream come true for us," said Robert Davis, from the company's social media and events outreach. It will no doubt prove equally as such to passionate fans of the franchise. Once they have it in pride of place on their shelf, that is. However, the same has not been said about the film itself so far. The reviews have thus far been largely mixed, with the best of them calling it the best sequel since Terminator 2. Unfortunately, even that is being considered by many to be damning with faint praise - given the lackluster results of the later sequels Dark Fate has marketed itself on circumventing.
Couple that with the fact that franchise fans have been burned repeatedly in the past, and the opening weekend was no better than that of Genisys. Cameron was vocal in his belief that Dark Fate would mark the opening of a whole new trilogy - one which would go on to focus on Artificial Intelligence. What the muted response will mean to future installments, however, remains to be seen. All fans (of the film and the franchise) can do is hope that positive word of mouth continues enough to combat the qualms some have amassed over the course of years and underwhelming sequels and reboots. Whatever the case, however, there is no denying the beautiful work that has gone into the piece pictured above. And whatever one's opinion on Terminator: Dark Fate, it would definitely shine amid any fan's collection.
