Fans of the classic 1991 science-fiction franchise sequel Terminator 2: Judgement Day from celebrated genre filmmaker James Cameron (Avatar) can probably cite the film line for line, scene for scene, and shot for shot by now. The fan favorite follow-up to Cameron's first Terminator movie (released in 1984) has become something of an institution among many connoisseurs of contemporary blockbuster fare. None of the three Terminator films that followed it have managed to live up to its impressive pedigree.
After the less than eager fanfare that greeted the theatrical release of Terminator Genisys during the summer of 2015, Judgement Day has maintained its rank at the very top of the franchise when it comes to securing viewer acclaim and attention. On that note, it would appear that the near universal love of the 1991 feature film has just spawned a loving recreation of one of its most iconic scenes - starring someone with more than a passing familiarity with the original movie's lead actor.
In an exclusive fan-made video (see above) directed by Ben Hess, the son of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Joseph Baena, stars as the T-800 in a contemporary recreation of the famous biker bar scene (see below) from Terminator 2: Judgement Day. While cutting a slightly smaller figure than the likes of his far bulkier father did back in 1991, Baena certainly plays the part off with plenty of his father's swagger and good looks, making the fan film a more than worthy homage to the classic Cameron movie.
Despite being the illegitimate child of Schwarzenegger and his former housekeeper Mildred Baena, Joseph has reportedly developed a loving and nurturing relationship with the former governor of California - one which may well have led him to want to recreate a scene from one of Schwarzenegger's most career-defining films. Compared side by side with the original scene from 1991, Baena plays the part of the T-800 with such apparent ease that many fans of The Terminator franchise might begin petitioning for his inclusion in the next film to be made in the series.
The well of appreciation and enthusiasm for Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgement Day hasn't abated in the twenty plus years since it saw initial theatrical release, a fact further evidenced by this latest fan film starring Schwarzenegger's own son. Terminator Genisys may have put a stop to plans for a sixth film in the beloved science-fiction franchise (for now), but hopefully productions like fan film director Ben Hess' will pave the way for more installments sometime down the road.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day will get a 3D theatrical re-release in 2017.
