Tenet plot details tease global disaster worse than a nuclear holocaust. In terms of filmmakers whose upcoming releases are considered major events, Oscar-nominee Christopher Nolan always manages to rank somewhere near the top of the list. Even after gaining a highly dedicated following through hits such as Memento, The Dark Knight trilogy, and Inception, Nolan’s films continue to grow in scale and demand.
With the upcoming release of Tenet, there seems to be an almost palpable degree of excitement in the air. Part of this could be because the film is set for a July release. With COVID-19. having closed cinemas around the world, Tenet’s scheduled July release date means that it will be one of the first films to see when theatres open back up again. After months of being denied the pleasure of seeing a film on the big screen, it was hard to image a better cinema experience than a Nolan film. Unfortunately, the release date for Tenet was pushed back, though by only two weeks, to July 31. With fans itching to get more information about the film, Tenet actor Kenneth Branagh has teased fans with some plot details.
Even with the film’s release date just over a month away, no one really knows exactly what Tenet is about. It was originally believed by many that the story revolved around a time-traveling plot and that humanity might hinge on the verge of nuclear annihilation. But now thanks to EW (and acclaimed actor Kenneth Branagh), we’ve learned that the possibility of nuclear war in Tenet isn’t the worst-case scenario that many originally believed it to be. According to Branagh:
“It’s an espionage piece that’s dealing with a global threat to the world. A nuclear holocaust is not the greatest disaster that could befall the human race. Tenet discusses an even worse possibility, and it is wrapped up in this mind-boggling treatment of time that continues Chris Nolan’s preoccupations in films way back to Memento, through Interstellar and Inception.”
That might sound like an utterly bleak mini-breakdown of Tenet’s plot, but given that even Nolan’s actors have reportedly had difficulty getting the story straight, there’s surely much more to the film than just this. Even from the earliest days after Tenet was announced, Nolan seemed to thrive off of teasing just the right bits and pieces, which were then studied and discussed by fans. Theories were built up (and continue to be built up) about how Tenet will sit in comparison to past cerebral bending stories like Inception and Interstellar. That sort of uncertainty has had a long build into what is now a tremendous amount of anticipation.
Of the many questions that Branagh’s new comments will prompt is, "what could be worse than nuclear annihilation?". Surely it will have to be something that doesn’t immediately wipe out mankind, but instead leaves a great deal of suffering in its wake. It’s tough to say at this point what that could be, but fans are definitely going to have a very exciting time finding out when the time comes for Tenet to reveal its secrets.
