The new Tenet trailer will have its world premiere tonight on Fortnite. Christopher Nolan's latest remains on track to debut in theaters this July, becoming the first major movie to welcome viewers back to the multiplex after the coronavirus shutdowns. There are still questions concerning the feasibility of that plan, especially since it's been said Warner Bros. needs 80% of the world's theaters to reopen in order to confidently release Tenet. Even as places start to loosen restrictions, there's no guarantee that will happen in time for July.

For now, WB is proceeding as if Tenet is definitely coming out as scheduled, which means now is the time to ramp up marketing efforts. There hasn't been any real Tenet advertising materials since the initial teaser last December, but that's set to change. New Tenet TV spots confirmed another trailer was on the way, but cinephiles have been waiting to learn when exactly they'll be able to see it. Now, that information has been revealed, and it probably isn't what people are expecting.

Fortnite announced today the new Tenet trailer will premiere in the game's Party Royale mode tonight, starting at 8 pm EST. You can see the post on their official Twitter page in the space below:

This is arguably an atypical venue for a Hollywood tentpole trailer release. Normally, previews for these types of films debut in conjunction with another high-profile film's premiere, a pop culture convention, or a broadcast television event. That's what happened with the first Tenet trailer, which came out the same week as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, things have obviously changed since then. There are no new blockbuster movies screening with a majority of theaters closed and live sporting events remain on hiatus amidst the coronavirus pandemic. That limits the available platforms for WB to make a big splash with the Tenet trailer, which is probably why the studio turned to Fortnite. As people continue to quarantine and practice social distancing, they have extra free time to play video games, so Tenet is trying to capitalize on that.

Still, all of this is a bit unusual. There's been palpable buzz for Tenet for a while now, as Nolan is one of the few directors working today who can sell an original film with just his name. WB easily could have generated hype for Tenet by simply unveiling the trailer online earlier in the day (which is what many had anticipated). It's curious they decided to go this route, but fortunately fans don't have to wait much longer to get their next look at Tenet. And hopefully, all the drama about its release date and a potential delay can be put to rest.
