New Tenet images reveal a better look at John David Washington’s Protagonist. Beginning with his debut feature Following in 1998, Christopher Nolan has steadily built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most ambitious and successful directors. Now Nolan is set to release his 11th film, the mysterious thriller Tenet, though the coronavirus pandemic has cast a cloud of doubt over the movie’s arrival (and indeed over the entire future of theatrically released films).

Nolan of course tends to shroud all his movies in secrecy, and such has been the case for Tenet since it was first announced in May of 2019. Since that initial out-of-the-blue announcement, audiences have been treated to a handful of carefully chosen hints about what the film is, and also what it isn’t (specifically, it isn’t a time travel movie, at least not in the traditional sense). In somewhat of a surprise move, the most recent Tenet trailer actually gave out an unusually high amount of potential information about the movie, though the specifics of the plot still remain mysterious.

Thanks to a new image release from Total Film (via Games Radar), Nolan fans have a little more to chew on as they continue to anticipate Tenet’s release (which thus far has not been officially moved, though the most recent trailer played somewhat coy by only saying “coming soon”). Two of the four new images feature the movie’s star Washington, whose character it was recently revealed is literally named “Protagonist” (at least in the movie’s official synopsis). Another shot focuses on Elizabeth Debicki, whose character hasn’t received a ton of attention in the trailers that have been released so far. Kenneth Branagh appears in the final shot, playing a character who again is mostly a mystery. There’s also a behind-the-scenes shot of Nolan himself working with Washington. Not pictured are the movie’s other main cast members Robert Pattinson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Dimple Kapadia, Himesh Patel and Michael Caine.

Of course, every new Nolan release is met with loads of hype and anticipation, and Tenet has been no exception. In the case of Tenet, there might even be more anticipation than usual, especially in Hollywood itself as the entire industry nervously waits to see what the theatrical landscape will be like post-coronavirus. As the country slowly goes through the process of reopening, the movie business is looking to Nolan to jump start what remains of what was going to be another summer of blockbuster releases. It remains to be seen if Tenet can bring audiences flocking back to theaters, even if those theaters are forced to operate at limited capacity due to social distancing restrictions. But if any filmmaker can excite movie fans enough to get them out of their houses and back in theaters, it’s Nolan, one of the few directors working today who has established himself as a legitimate name brand a la Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese.
