A new 3D rendered breakdown of a crucial scene may be the key to finally understanding exactly what is going on during the ending of Tenet, one of the most confusing films in recent memory. Tenet was released in theaters this summer after many delays. While many viewers were awe-struck by what writer/director Christopher Nolan was able to accomplish on both a visual and storytelling level, many were left scratching their heads at the film's complicated plot and, at times, muffled dialogue. Just like the title of the film, the plot of Tenet is palindromic in nature, moving forward in a more standard linear fashion, before reversing backward on itself around the midway point and resolving in a closed-loop by the end.
Now that Tenet has officially been released on VOD and Blu-ray, fans have been able to watch (and rewatch) the film with hopes of analyzing the script's many complexities. The climax of Tenet centers around the so-called "Gate Scene" where The Protagonist (John David Washington) and Ives (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) are attempting to stop one of Sator's (Kenneth Branagh) terrorists from arming the Algorithm with a bomb. However, audiences have wondered how the blue team corpse gets on the ground, as well as who cleared the rocks after the trip wire explosion blocked the initial path out.
A new YouTube video may very well be a major step in the right direction. User Welby CoffeeSpill has painstakingly recreated the so-called "Gate Scene" with 3D rendering software in hopes of helping viewers get to the bottom of one of the film's many mysteries. With some basic 3D visualizations (along with color-coded characters), the breakdown hopes to answer Tenet questions with facts, along with theories.
If this video is correct, that would mean a skeleton was in this cave months before these events, slowly regenerating in backwards time until he was alive and able to hop up and save The Protagonist from being shot. While a fascinating concept, some of the details of Tenet are purposely vague in the film. Nolan leaves it up to the audience to fill in the blanks, so fans may never have any "answers" to Tenet, even after viewing videos like this one.
Even Washington, who had access to the script and Nolan's brain on a daily basis while filming Tenet, has admitted to being confused by the film's plot. For some, the complicated nature of it and the movie's ending led to a frustrating viewing experience. It may also explain why the critical reception wasn't quite as glowing as some of Nolan's previous films. However, many, like the YouTube creator who made this video, are just starting a much deeper dive into the world of Tenet and what exactly makes it tick.
