Putting a potential Tenacious D 2 movie aside for a moment, the origin story of comedy rock duo Tenacious D is actually run-of-the-mill. Members Jack Black and Kyle Gass met each other while they were part of Tim Robbin’s theater group The Actors’ Gang and formed their band in the mid-1990s after they bonded over their shared love of classic rock and heavy metal.
However, the musical comedy Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny paints a much funnier – if fictional – account of how their band came to be. Directed by musician and filmmaker Liam Lynch, the 2006 comedy followed two wannabe rockers named JB (Jack Black) and KG (Kyle Gass) who become pals and soon form the rock band Tenacious D – so named for the complementary butt-cheek birthmarks they share. When they learn of a legendary guitar pick fashioned from the tooth of Satan that’s said to give those who wield it extraordinary musical prowess, JB and KG set out to steal it and become the greatest band of all time.
Critically and commercially, Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny didn’t fare well but it was a hit with fans of the titular band and has become a cult favorite in recent years. Tenacious D: The Movie 2 Doesn’t Look Likely
Given how long it’s been since Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny was released – and the fact it was a critical and commercial dud – a follow-up doesn’t seem likely to happen. Jack Black was asked - thankfully not by Eric Andre - about the possibility of Tenacious D 2 in a 2012 interview with The Aquarian and stated that Warner Bros (the parent company of Pick Of Destiny distributors New Line Cinema) probably wouldn’t greenlight a sequel, revealing “…they have no interest in doing another Tenacious D movie as far as we know.”However, all is not lost for devotees of the comedy rock duo and their cult film.
Tenacious D In Post-Apocalypto Is A Sort-Of Sequel
Tenacious D: The Movie 2 might be a pipe dream but at least the band’s adventures continued in the animated web series Tenacious D In Post-Apocalypto. Released independently via Tenacious D’s YouTube channel, the comedy series follows animated versions of Jack Black and Kyle Gass as they try to survive a post-apocalyptic world in the aftermath of a nuclear war. Though not a direct sequel, Black has referred to the web series as The Pick Of Destiny part 2 and it’s about as close to Tenacious D 2 as audiences are likely to get.
