Doctor Who was first broadcast back in 1963, making it the longest-running science fiction show in the world. To date there have been 37 seasons of the show, spanning over 850 episodes. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that there has been plenty of acting talent on show during this time.

Many of these actors have also been lucky enough to find themselves in a movie or TV show within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making them part of a very special select group who have worked on both hugely successful sci-fi franchises. Specifically, which of these recognizable faces have managed the crossover between the Whoniverse and the MCU?

Karen Gillan

Karen Gillan as Amy Pond in Doctor Who and Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy

Scottish actress Karen Gillan landed her breakout role as Amy Pond, the red-headed companion to the Eleventh Doctor (played by Matt Smith). She was fun and fiery and worked wonderfully alongside Smith and her on-screen partner Rory (played by Arthur Darvill).

Gillan went on to star in several big blockbusters including, of course, Guardians of the Galaxy, where she portrayed Nebula. The challenging role has seen her character evolve throughout four MCU movies from a villain to a tragic heroic. She's set to reprise her role in both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Christopher Eccleston

Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor in Doctor Who and Malekith in Thor: The Dark World

Christopher Eccleston played the ninth incarnation of the Doctor and was the first to play the legendary sci-if hero at the beginning of its revamped run back in 2005. Eccleston played the Doctor for just one season but made a huge impact on the style and tone of future incarnations.

The actor also appeared as the malevolent dark elf Malekith in the 2013 Thor sequel Thor: The Dark World. In the film, Malekith aims to take possession of the Aether, a mystical force that will allow him to become omnipotent and potentially end the world.

Jenna Coleman

Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald in Doctor Who and Connie in Captain America: The First Avenger

The Blackpool-born actress Jenna Coleman first appeared in Doctor Who as Clara Oswald, the fresh-faced companion who supported both the eleventh and twelfth incarnation of Doctor, played by Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi respectively.

Coleman also made a brief appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger as Connie. Connie was Bucky Barnes' date when both he and Steve Rogers visited the Stark Expo. Sadly, she never appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again.

Toby Jones

Toby Jones as the Dream Lord in Doctor Who and Dr. Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger

The talented British actor Toby Jones was yet another star who appeared alongside Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger. Jones played the nefarious Dr. Arnim Zola, a role he would go on to reprise in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Marvel series Agent Carter.

Jones starred in the fifth season of the revived Doctor Who series as the Dream Lord in the episode "Amy's Choice". This character was psychic manifestation of the darker parts of the Doctor's character and had the ability to control the dreams of others as he wished.

David Tennant

David Tennant as The Doctor in Doctor Who and Kilgrave in Jessica Jones

David Tennant's portrayal of the Tenth Doctor is often voted as the most popular incarnation of the world-famous time lord. He bought a charismatic and eccentric charm to the role, as well as a level of childlike naiveté which is synonymous with the character.

However, Tennant showed off a completely different side of himself for his role as the manipulative and villainous Kilgrave in the Marvel series Jessica Jones - a man from Jones' past who can control minds and poses a terrifying threat.

David Bradley

David Bradley in Doctor Who and as the Church Keeper in Captain America: The First Avenger

Veteran British actor David Bradley has an endless wealth of acting credits to his name, including a couple of different roles in Doctor Who as well as playing the Tower Keeper in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Bradley played a character called Solomon in the 2012 Doctor Who episode "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" as well as appearing as the first incarnation of the Doctor in the 2017 Christmas special, taking over the role from William Hartnell. Interestingly enough Bradley also played Hartnell in the 2013 Doctor Who TV movie dramatization An Adventure in Space and Time.

Tony Curran

Tony Curran as Vincent Van Gogh in Doctor Who and Bor in Thor: The Dark World

Scottish actor Tony Curran played Vincent Van Gogh alongside Matt Smith's incarnation of the Doctor in the memorable season 5 episode "Vincent and the Doctor" - often regarded as one of the most sentimental episodes in the entire show.

Curran had an uncredited role as Bor in Thor: The Dark World but also played Finn Cooley in an episode of the Netflix series Daredevil. Interestingly enough he also starred in two other Marvel-related franchises both as Priest in Blade II as well as an agent in X-Men: First Class.

Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield as Frank in Doctor Who and Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man

The Oscar-nominated Andrew Garfield played Frank, a young 1930’s American lad from New York City in both the episodes "Daleks in Manhattan" and "Evolution of the Daleks". Though he was kidnapped by pig slaves at one point, he was saved by the Doctor.

Garfield also played Peter Parker in the rebooted movie The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel. Rumors are that he may don his Spider-Man spandex once more for the forthcoming Spider-Man sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home and star alongside fellow Spidey’s Tom Holland and even Tobey Maguire.

Josh Dallas

Josh Dallas as Node 2 in Doctor Who and Fandrall in Thor

Manifest and Once Upon a Time star Josh Dallas got his acting break with a few small roles on British television, including a part as Node 2 in "Silence in the Library", from the fourth series of Doctor Who.

Dallas later played one of Thor’s supporting warriors Fandral in his 2011 origin story. He was replaced on the sequel by Shazam actor Zachary Levi due to scheduling conflicts with his role commitments on ABC fantasy adventure drama Once Upon a Time.

Christopher Fairbank

Christopher Fairbank as Fenton in Doctor Who and The Broker in Guardians of the Galaxy

With over 140 acting credits to his name veteran British star, Christopher Fairbank is a very recognizable actor. However, one would be forgiven for not spotting him under his makeup and prosthetics for his role as the Broker in the 2014 MCU entry Guardians of the Galaxy.

The Broker was the person on Xandar whom Peter Quill attempts to sell the recently acquired Orb (which contains the Power Stone) just before Gamora shows up to steal it. In the same year as his part in Guardians Fairbank also took the role of Fenton in Doctor Who, in the season 8 episode entitled "Flatline."
