The release of Netflix's He's All That was met with mixed reviews. In addition to being compared to many similar movies in the genre, it was picked apart and analyzed in comparison to the 90's classic teen movie it's based on.

The gender-swapped remake of She's All That has a few flaws, but it also does some things right in changing the story a little to cater to the current social climate and modern day cinematic preferences. Still, like most teen movies, He's All That is filled with clichés that the genre is well-known for. Thanks to that, there are several other movies fans can turn to for a similar storyline or something that executes those tropes better.

Clueless (1995)

Cher staring dreamily ahead in Clueless

Loosely based on Emma by Jane Austen, Clueless follows the stylish and popular Cher Horowitz and her matchmaking exploits. After successfully matching two teachers at her school, Cher takes on Tai, a new girl, as her new project and gives her a makeover as a way to give back to the community.

Even though Cher wasn't the one subjected to a makeover, the changes in Tai showed her a new perspective on her life and priorities. Like Padgett - who was initially obsessed with the superficial and keeping up appearances until her relationship with Cameron gave her a new perspective - Cher realizes she has genuine feelings for someone she's close to and she starts helping in more meaningful ways.

Pretty In Pink (1986)

Andie and Blane sitting together in Pretty In Pink

Padgett in He's All That lies to everyone about where she's living, ashamed to reveal the truth of her financial situation. She hides this well with her glamorous social media persona and sponsorships until the end when she reveals her real story. Andie in Pretty in Pink shares a few similarities with Padgett, as she's an outcast at her high school filled with rich kids, while she lives with her underemployed working-class father.

When Blane, one of the popular guys at school asks Andie out, she's at first excited, before the reality of their differences in social status hits her. The "unpopular teen getting with the popular person" trope is a central element in both movies, as well as the "best friend with a secret crush" cliché. However, Pretty In Pink has an ending that subverts expectations, making it a unique teen movie.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Kat and Patrick sitting on the water in 10 Things I Hate About You

In 10 Things I Hate About You, when Cameron falls for Bianca - a popular girl at his new school - she tells him her father will only allow her to date when her older sister does too. To get around the overprotective father's rule, Cameron pays Patrick to court Kat. Later, after Bianca initially shunned Cameron in favor of another popular senior named Joey, the two of them end up hitting it off and became close.

Unlike most teen movies that focus on one love story, 10 Things I Hate About You switched the focus between the two sisters Kat and Bianca, and their respective love stories. Of the two of them, Kat's story is most similar to Padgett and Cameron's relationship, with the bet and the payment. It's a witty, charming movie with great performances from legends like the late Heath Ledger.

Drive Me Crazy (1999)

Nicole and Chase looking at each other in Drive Me Crazy

In Drive Me Crazy, Nicole misses out on the chance to go to prom with a basketball star and sets her eyes on her neighbor, Chase, instead. Chase, who's just been dumped by his girlfriend, agrees to pretend-date Nicole. With Nicole's help, Chase gets a makeover and during their fake relationship, the two of them slowly start to develop genuine feelings for each other.

With the makeover trope and two teens developing an unlikely relationship, Drive Me Crazy ticks a lot of the boxes that make up key plots in He's All That. Although it's not a very popular movie, it's a feel-good story with some serious and touching moments.

She's All That (1999)

Laney and Zack standing together in She's All That

In She's All That, Zack - a popular jock - works on getting over his girlfriend dumping him for a reality TV star by focusing on a new project, Laney. His goal is to transform her into a prom queen as part of a bet with his friends to make anyone popular. With time, he starts to genuinely like her, and the bet is forgotten until the ugly reveal that puts their blossoming relationship in jeopardy.

Of course, the plot of this one closely mirrors He's All That, as one is a remake of the other. The remake improved the story in some ways (for example, by introducing more diverse characters), but She's All That remains the best makeover movie. One fun callback to the 1999 movie in the remake was the casting of Rachel Leigh Cook who played Laney in the original as the lead's mother in the remake, as well as Matthew Lillard.

Not Another Teen Movie (2001)

Chris Evans and Chyler Leigh in Not Another Teen Movie

Not Another Teen Movie is a mish-mash of every popular film in the genre. It pokes fun at the tropes that fans love and hate, including the nerd makeover based on a bet between a jock and his friends.

The movie is based on She's All That, which explains the many similarities between it and He's All That. In addition, it spoofs plenty of other teen movies including Sixteen Candles, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Bring It On. Although it made fun of the genre, the movie didn't break the fourth wall too often and was still fun to watch, thanks to a young Chris Evans' performance.

Geek Charming (2011)

Dylan and Josh facing each other in Geek Charming

Two complete opposites; Dylan, the popular girl, and Josh, the film geek, cross paths after several mishaps, which lead to her becoming the subject of his documentary/movie about high school popularity in Disney's Geek Charming. A lot of things happen during the course of the filming, from the two of them becoming closer (but denying their feelings), to Dylan's boyfriend breaking up with her because she was starting to act and look like "the nerds."

Geek Charming almost reverses the makeover trope common in teen movies by having Dylan seen as the complete opposite of what's often considered popular. By the end of the movie though, the message is the same - it's not what's on the outside that matters, but what's on the inside.

The Kissing Booth (2018)

Elle and Noah in the Kissing Booth

In The Kissing Booth, Elle has a huge crush on one of the most popular guys in school, who happens to be her best friend's older brother, Noah. After he saves her from an embarrassing incident and they share a kiss in a kissing booth, they start a secret relationship, which nearly wrecks Elle's friendship with Lee.

Like He's All That, the movie bases the main love story on the common trope of an unpopular person falling for a popular one. That's just one of many clichés in The Kissing Booth. Elle and Noah's story continues throughout the franchise, with a surprising ending in the recently released third installment, The Kissing Booth 3.

The DUFF (2018)

Bianca and Wesley sitting on a log in the woods in The DUFF

Dismayed to find out that she's her group's designated ugly fat friend (DUFF), Bianca makes a deal with a popular jock. In return for her helping him with his grades, he helps her with a makeover. The time they spend together helps them see more in each other and their friendship evolves into something bigger.

The DUFF has its shortfalls, but it still ticks most of the boxes for a teen movie, from Bianca's makeover to the classic "tutor the jock so he doesn't get benched" trope. It also has an important message championing self-love and body positivity in movies, even though the execution is a little flawed.

After (2019)

Hardin and Tessa sitting on a bridge in After

Tessa Young has an eventful first year at college when she crosses paths with the dark, brooding Hardin Scott. After the initial friction between the two, Hardin starts showing more interest in her and before long, they're in a relationship, and Tessa's fallen hard.

Just like He's All That, the relationship between the two lead characters is built on a lie, starting because of a bet. The finer details of the bet are a little different but there's also an element of a makeover as Tessa changes the way she dresses because of Hardin's taunts. Despite the mixed reviews After had, the franchise is still going strong with a third movie, After We Fell, soon to be released.
