PlayStation 5 gameplay of Temtem, a massively multiplayer monster collecting game from developer Crema, has been revealed through a new gameplay video. Temtem was released through Steam as an early access title back in January, but the early access release on PS5 will be the game's first console release. Versions of the game for Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch are also planned for 2021.

While the premise and even presentation of Temtem is reminiscent of the Pokémon franchise, several aspects of the new title allow it to stand on its own. Like Pokémon, Temtem tasks players with finding and catching a large collection of creatures, which are then used to battle other creatures either in the wild or in duels against trainers. Temtem features starter Temtem, similar to the starter Pokémon in its sister franchise, which can drastically change how players experience the early hours of the game. However, Temtem sets itself apart by also acting as a massively-multiple online game, allowing players from around the world to explore together or battle each other. Special items in Temtem allow players to more easily explore the game's large open world, making the title an overall more free-form and less linear experience.

Sony has released a new gameplay overview video which demonstrates how Temtem will look and play when it releases on PlayStation 5 next week. The video explains the title's basic gameplay loop, which focuses on exploration and skill-based combat utilizing a collection of Temtem. Role-playing elements, such as character customization and Temtem trading, are also major features of the game. Multiplayer elements will allow players to experience the entire story campaign alongside a buddy or battle others with their own team of Temtem.

Although the game was originally announced for a 2021 console release, it was later revealed that Temtem would release on PlayStation 5 as an Early Access title on December 8. The game will then come to Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch at an unspecific point in 2021. Temtem was also intended to release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but the game's last-gen release was cancelled to allow developer Crema to focus on the game's current-gen versions.

While Temtem strongly resembles Pokémon at first glance, the new title has a lot of unique features working in its favor. The online multiplayer nature of the game will allow players to cooperate and compete, pitting their creatures against each other in a very direct way. This is a feature that Pokémon fans have long been asking for, and the potential for a more social version of this type of game is even evidenced by Pokémon GO. With major console releases quickly approaching, it seems very likely that Temtem will experience a large spike in popularity.
