New Poster & Images For Julie Taymor's 'The Tempest'

Helen Mirren in The Tempest

The newly released images seen here depict some of the films central characters. Helen Mirren will be turning in a gender bending depiction of the film's (typically male) lead Prospero, now Prospera. She is seen here wielding her fiery and wondrous magic as the exiled Duchess.

The film tells the tale of the Duchess Proaperas' banishment to a “primitive” Island with her young daughter where she is forced to master the elements of nature and magic. Prospera plots to return her Daughter to her rightful place and wreak revenge on those responsible for her downfall. When the opportunity arises she calls forth a powerful storm (Tempest) to bring her betraying brother and all the key players in her usurping to the Island where she will have a decidedly “home court” advantage.

Russell Brand and Alfred Molina in The Tempest

Russell Brand (Get Me To The Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) portrays Trinculo a court jester shipwrecked along with the rest of the Royal’s. He is seen here with his foolish cohort and would be partner in crime Stephano played by Alfred Molina.

The cast is rounded out with the likes of Alan Cumming, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn and Chris Cooper.

Poster for The Tempest

The Tempest is a story that lends itself to the mythically expansive visual style of Ms. Taymor and if the poster provided by The Playlist is any indication, this film will not fail to deliver on its promise. Though Shakespearean adaptations are never a guaranteed win at the box office, for those of us a taste for it,  a Taymor helmed, Helen Mirren interpretation of one of literature's most notorious protagonists sounds like a delicious winter treat.

Touchstone Pictures will release the film on December the 10th of this year.

What do you think of the images and possibilities for the movie?
