Telltale's The Walking Dead: The Final Season Begins in August

Clementine's journey will begin to come to an end when The Walking Dead: The Final Season releases in August. Developer Telltale Games announced today that the first episode of the narrative adventure game will release August 14 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Preorders will begin on June 8, where players will be able to purchase the entire season for $19.99. As a bonus for preordering, PS4 and Xbox One owners will also get The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection, which includes all of the previous games in the series.

Taking place after the events of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, the focus of The Final Season once again shifts to Clementine. No longer the young child she was in the first season, she's now watching over a child of her own while attempting to become a leader like Lee was. Telltale says that players will be able to "define your relationships, fight the undead, and determine how Clementine's story ends" in the season.

In addition to the release date, some other details about the upcoming final season of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead were also revealed. For one, the season will feature a higher quality of visuals as it will support both 4K and HDR on compatible televisions. Combat is also said to be enhanced as there are unscripted sequences, and a new over-the-shoulder camera will be used to offer more dynamic gameplay. Telltale is calling it the "most engaging The Walking Dead game yet," since players will have to do more than simply make choices to determine how the story unfolds.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is the culmination of a several year story, and all of the improvements that Telltale Games have outlined seem great in theory. Past games were criticized for their over-reliance on quick-time events for combat, and this new system should be much better if it winds up being engaging. The visual upgrades are also great to see, as Telltale have struggled with technical aspects in the past and have retooled their game engine in response to those criticisms.

After an underwhelming third season, Telltale Games seem to be back on the right track for The Walking Dead: The Final Season. Whether or not they wind up crafting a compelling conclusion to Clementine's journey remains to be seen, but it seems like all of the tools are at their disposal. It will be very intriguing to see how her final chapter begins when episode one launches in August.
